Junior outside hitter Kara Stamper and junior setter Shelby Grace Enochs of Bryan College were two of four Appalachian Athletic Conference players named Monday to the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Northeast Region first team. The others were libero Ana Calaza of Union College, the region player of the year, and middle blocker Emilee Linkous of Milligan. Stamper led the AAC with 491 kills and 3.66 per set, while Enochs was No. 1 in assists with 1,338 and 9.8 per set and also had 377 digs. The oddly named region included honorees from NAIA schools in Georgia and Alabama as well as Tennessee and Kentucky. The NAIA announced Tuesday that Stamper, Enochs and Calaza received All-American honorable mention.

Basketball

* Bella Taylor had 23 points and four assists and Jamie Chauvin and Corey Caulder scored 17 and 14 points as Sewanee won 76-71 in overtime in an NCAA Division III women's basketball game Tuesday at Covenant. The Tigers (6-3) trailed 51-44 in the fourth quarter before forcing the extra period, when Chauvin scored six early points. Aleigha Williams and Joanna Smith scored 20 apiece for Covenant (2-5), Smith adding 14 rebounds while Rachel Price grabbed 10. Williams had eight rebounds and five assists.

* Despite 22 points from Jorden Williams and 15 points plus five assists from Cody Jones, the Sewanee men's basketball team lost 73-68 Tuesday at Huntingdon. Williams hit five 3-point shots for the Tigers (5-2), who got 12 points from Keshonn Carter and eight rebounds from Clay Born. Andre Ashley led the winning Hawks (4-2) with 18 points, nine rebounds and four steals and also had four assists.

* The Bryan College women's basketball team improved to 12-0 for the season with a 76-41 win Tuesday at Hiwassee. Earlier in the day, the Lady Lions moved up from 19th to 17th in the NAIA Division II poll.

* The Dalton State men's basketball team is ranked ninth in the NAIA Division I poll that came out Tuesday after being ranked No. 1 in the preseason. Coach Tony Ingle's Roadrunners (7-2) are the reigning NAIA national champions but had only one starter coming back and lost their first two games this season, so they knew they would not stay on top when the first in-season poll was released. They have avenged one of those losses in their seven-game winning streak. Undefeated Kentucky schools Pikeville and Georgetown are Nos. 1 and 2 in the new poll with Freed-Hardeman from Henderson, Tenn., No. 3.

Football

* The "Beast Weekend" football combine is this week at the Chattanooga Sports Complex at 6246 Dayton Blvd., with high school players featured Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and middle schoolers getting their chance Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Beast University Training is one of the host entities; registration is handled through gridironscouting.com, which will post the combine rankings that will be seen by college recruiters throughout the country. Participation costs $130 and will include player measurements and testing in the 40-yard dash, 185-pound bench press, standing broad jump, vertical jump, pro agility, 5-10-5 drills and 7-on-7 competition. Each session also will include nutrition and health advice and guidance in the recruiting process from former college and professional players.

Running

* Three area runners for Dalton State's 11th-place NAIA men's cross country team are leaving the Roadrunners after three years as scheduled to continue their Regents' Engineering Transfer Program educations. Twins Brody and Parker Cook from Northwest Whitfield are headed to Georgia Tech next month to begin wrapping up their industrial engineering studies, and Paul Patterson from Bradley Central is going to Tennessee Tech for mechanical engineering. All three were Southern States Athletic Conference Scholar Athletes.
