Georgia has picked up its first football commitment of the Kirby Smart era, and it's one of significance.

Richard LeCounte III, the No. 1 athlete prospect in the 2017 signing class according to 247Sports.com, committed to the Bulldogs through Twitter on Sunday afternoon. The 6-foot, 180-pounder plays at Liberty County High School in Riceboro, Ga., which is roughly 40 miles southwest of Savannah.

ESPN rates LeCounte as the No. 1 safety prospect in the 2017 class, while Scout.com ranks him as the No. 2 safety.

LeCounte had dozens of scholarship offers, including from Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Ohio State and Tennessee. His lead recruiter at Georgia had been defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt, who on Friday accepted the same role at Alabama.

The Bulldogs have 15 commitments for the 2016 class and four for 2017, including quarterback Bailey Hockman from the Atlanta suburb of Powder Springs. Hockman is the No. 3 pro-style quarterback in the '17 class according to 247Sports.com.
