UTC's Shumpert earns mid-major weekly award and other sports news

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's basketball sophomore Chelsey Shumpert was named Southern Conference player of the week by the website College Sports Madness in their weekly awards this week. Shumpert scored 31 points in two wins at the UTSA Holiday Classic in San Antonio last week, including 21 points in the Mocs' 67-54 win over South Dakota. Shumper is the third UTC player to receive the weekly conference award by College Sports Madness, joining teammate Jasmine Joyner and Keiana Gilbert, and Gilbert was also named national mid-major player of the week by the website Nov. 30 following her 27-point performace in UTC's upset win over then-No. 4 Tennessee on Nov. 26. Shumpert is off to a solid start this week, scoring 14 points in UTC's 54-52 win over Harvard on Monday, and she is second in the team in scoring with 10.7 points per game for the 12-3 Mocs, who open Southern Conference play Saturday afternoon at Wofford.

Bryan College and Tennessee Wesleyan split a Appalachian Athletic Conference basketball doubleheader Wednesday evening in Athens. Bryan's men took control in the second half for an 85-74 win while the TWC women rallied after trailing at halftime to win 75-58. Brandon Cole provided the bulk of the offense for the Lions in the men's game, scoring 36 points in the win while Oteriah Lee scored 16 and Robert Troino added 10. Brice Cusick had 10 rebounds and nine points for Bryan, which won the rebounding battle 39-29. TWC was led by Charles White with 22, and Devante Jenkins and Leland Robinson each scored 12 points and Jenkins had 10 rebounds. In the women's game, TWC's Lady Bulldogs (14-1, 8-1 AAC), who are ranked 14th in NAIA Division II, was led by Jenna Adams, who scored 15 points as well as 16 rebounds three steals and two blocks. Shira Buley led TWC with 18 points and Armeka Booker (15) and Melanie Barker (13) also scored in double figures to help the Lady Bulldogs rally after trailing 35-31 at the half. The Lady Lions (11-4, 6-2) were led by 20 points each from Megan Billingsby and Victoria Griffin.

The Tennessee Temple women's basketball teamlost 68-65 in Wednesday's game at Edward Waters in Jacksonville, Fla., after losing 70-69 Tuesday at Florida College near Tampa, where the Temple men lost 84-77.

Wrestling

Sean Boyle, UTC wrestler at 125 pounds, has been selected as Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for the Dec. 24-Jan. 26 period. Boyle knocked off the nation's 10th- and 11th-ranked wrestlers in his weight class to finish third in the Southern Scuffle hosted by the Mocs. A native of Lowell, Mass., Boyle used the Scuffle performance to move up to 10th in the latest InterMat national rankings. Mocs heavyweight Jared Johnson took the honor for the week ending Dec. 24.
