Coach, official Goss dies at age 68 and other sports news

Charlie Goss, a legend in the East Ridge community, died Sunday morning. He was 68. Goss served East Ridge schools as a football, wrestling and track coach and was inducted into East Ridge High School's inaugural hall of fame this past fall. Goss, who attended East Ridge from 1961 to 1965, was the school's first state wrestling champion and gained a statewide and even national reputation as a coach, referee and tournament director. He was a member of the National Wrestling and Chattanooga Sports halls of fame. The funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Ridgedale Baptist Church. Visitation will be 3-8 this afternoon at the East Chapel of the Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 South Moore Road. Memorial contributions can be made to the East Ridge High wrestling team, 4320 Bennett Road in East Ridge.

Basketball

Sewanee convincingly sewpt Birmingham-Southern in Southern Athletic Association basketball doubleheader on Sunday with the men winning 77-65, while the women used a strong first-half to roll to a 71-53 win. Former McCallie standout Jorden Williams led the way for the Sewanee men (7-5, 2-0) with 22 points, while Marcellus Caldwell added 20 and Matt Tome scored 11 to keep the Tigers unbeated in league play. In the women's game, Sewanee (8-4, 1-2) got its first conference win by building a 32-13 halftime lead. Five Sewanee players cscored in dobule figures let by Casey Hassett with 18 points. Jamie Chauvin scored 12, and Rebekah Faulkner and Hanna McCormack each scored 12. Kayla Sewell recorded a double-double and dominated the scoresheet with 10 points, 13 rebounds, six blocks and five assists wiith no turnovers.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. Former Silverdale Baptist Academy standout Mariah Massengill was one of two Eastern Kentucky players to make a layup in the final 30 seconds Saturday that helped the Colonels hold off Southeast Missouri State 57-54 for their first Ohio Valley Conference victory of the season. Massengill's jump shot with 7:18 to go gave Eastern Kentucky (6-7, 1-2) a 47-40 lead at the Show Me Center, but the Redhawks battled back, briefly taking two one-point leads. They were down by one and at the free-throw line with 10 seconds left, but missed both and Massengill took a long pass and converted the last two of her 11 points. SEMO had 5.2 seconds remaining to try and get off a shot but was unable.

Softball

The Lady Moc RBI Club will meet Thursday at 6 p.m. at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball program's indoor practice facility at Warner Park, and the public is invited. The club is the booster organization for the softball Mocs and will be hosting a pancake breakfast to benefit the team on Jan. 31 at the Applebee's in Northgate Mall, from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. The cost will be $6, and carryouts will be available. (The Chattanooga State baseball team will have a similar breakfast that morning at the Applebee's on Brainerd Road, from 8 to 10, for $5, and Tigers apparel will be on sale.)
