Chattanooga State completes 4-0 weekend and more area college basketball news

Chattanooga State pulled off its second basketball doubleheader sweep in two days Saturday with an 86-79 women's victory and a 67-56 men's win against visiting Jackson State.

The Cleveland State Lady Cougars also went 2-0 for the weekend with a 73-57 defeat of Columbia State, but Columbia's Chargers beat the Cougars 77-64.

Ugo Mmonu had 19 points and seven rebounds Saturday for the Chattanooga State men, who improved to 13-5 overall and 8-3 in the TCCAA. Tramon Moore scored 17 points and Chaunce Watkins and Deshaun Williams added 12 and 10 for the Tigers. Jeda Doss scored 21 points and Teondra Crawford had 17 points and eight assists for the Lady Tigers, who got 16 points from Sydney Sims.

Brandi Whitted had 18 points, five assists and five steals and Jamesha Mosley contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds in the Lady Cougars' win. Rico Overall scored 18 points, Darrion Leslie added 13 and Alex Watkins had 15 rebounds in defeat for the Cleveland State men.

* Christina Johnson racked up 20 points and 15 rebounds, Emileigh Swafford scored 17 points amd Alex Swope passed for 10 assists as the Lee Flames won 69-57 in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader against Christian Brothers in Memphis. The hosts handled the Lee men, however, 76-55, as reigning GSC player of the year Trey Casey had 23 points with 4-of-5 3-point shooting, eight rebounds and four assists.

Chase Cullen scored 20 points on 7-of-10 field-goal shooting for the Flames, but no teammate joined him in double figures. Erin Walsh tallied 11 points on 3-of-5 3-point success for the Lady Flames.

* Shira Buley had 17 points, nine assists and four steals and Jenna Adams had 18 rebounds and three thefts with 16 points as the nationally 10th-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan Lady Bulldogs beat visiting Milligan 70-51 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play, but second-place Milligan won the men's game 71-57.

Armeka Booker also scored 17 points and Melanie Barker added 15 for the Lady Bulldogs (20-1, 12-1). Mickey Woods made 18 of 20 free throws and totaled 22 points with eight rebounds for the Buffaloes, while Leland Robinson led TWC with nine points and Devante Jenkins had eight rebounds.

* In another AAC doubleheader, Bryan lost 47-46 to the Bluefield women and 76-69 to the Ramblin' Rams, dropping the Lady Lions to 14-6 overall and 8-4 in the league and the Lions to 10-9, 6-6.

Brandon Cole had 24 points and 13 rebounds and Tyler Yoder scored 19 points for the Lions. Kristin Lane scored 15 points and Keila Formont had 14 points and five steals for the Lady Lions. Neither women's team scored after Lane hit the first of two free throws with 58 seconds to go.

* The Covenant men lost 74-65 at Maryville while the Lady Scots fell 67-58 at home to Meredith in USA South play. Four of the Maryville starters scored at least 13 points in the men's game, led by Spencer Shoffner with 18, and Antonio Jackson supplemented them with eight points, seven assists and three steals.

Will Portlock with 14 points and T.J. Cox with 12 points and five assists led Covenant, which has lost its last 17 meetings with Maryville. The Lady Scots lost despite 13 points from Aleigha Williams, 11 rebounds from Abbey Bailey and 10 points apiece from Rachel Price, Morgan Woodward and Liz Dougherty. Price added nine rebounds.

* The Tennessee Temple Lady Crusaders lost 84-74 at Allen University, which had lost 104-75 in a Dec. 2 game at Temple. The Lady Crusaders are 7-12.

* Friday at Griffin, Ga., the Georgia Northwestern Lady Bobcats dropped to 0-10 with a 57-39 loss to Southern Crescent Tech. Holly Mount had 13 points and 13 rebounds, Ashley Farrell had 12 points and five assists and Kambria Bankston and Chelsea Ludy had 12 and nine rebounds for GNTC.
