Neubert wins $2,500 at drag strip in 1957 Chevy and more Chattanooga region sports news

Tom Neubert of Corryton, Tenn., drove his 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air to first place and $2,500 at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip on Saturday. Using a modified 706-cubic-inch big-block engine with nitrous assist, Neubert won in the Heads Up 4.70 class by covering the one-eighth mile in 4.72 seconds. David Soloman of Spencer, Tenn., was second with a 4.76-second run in his 1971 Dodge Demon powered by a 645-ci Chrysler engine. Bruce Sexton in a 2004 Mustang won in the 5.30 class with a 5.32 run, and Ronnie Clayton was second in another '57 Chevy with a 5.33. Strip veterans Jim Nash and Steven Farrow were first and second at 5.70 and 5.71 in two Chevy dragsters in the 5.70 class. Bobby Griffith was first with Mark Dempsey second in the 6.00 class, and Wayne Stover was first with Mike Salteser second in the 7.00 class. Jeremiah Powell won in Super Pro with Mike Dyer second, and Shane Kay and Stan Curvin were first and second in Foot Brake. Mattie Keener added to her season points lead with the Junior Dragster victory, with Morgan Allen the runner-up.

* Cory Hedgecock won the Limited Late Model race Saturday night at I-75 Raceway in Sweetwater, and Ruben Mayfield and Jason Welshan were second and third out of 22 finishers. B-Hobby had 21 finishers, led by victor Danny Bray and Justin Best, and other winners were Brian Courtney in Sportsman, Michael Courtney in Four Cylinder, Freddie Prosser in Modfied Lite, Allen Walker in Thunder and Jacob Sharp in Front Wheel Drive.

Soccer

* With three players each from McCallie and Ooltewah, the Chattanooga area had 14 boys named to Tennessee High School Soccer Coaches Association all-state teams announced Monday evening. McCallie forwards David Bowman and Wesley Brown were named to the Division II-AA team, along with sophomore midfielder Drew Viscomi and Baylor senior forward Kyle Johnston and goalkeeper Colin Brewer. Ooltewah forward Ian Wolfe, defender Angel Santiago and goalkeeper Joey Sealor were picked for the Class AAA team, which also included Cleveland junior midfielder Jonathan Collins. Chattanooga Christian had a pair of Class A/AA players selected - senior forward Will Patton and senior midfielder Porter Black - as did Boyd-Buchanan in midfielder David Ingram and defender John Beasley. Arts & Sciences senior defender Josh Barbosa joined those four.

Softball

* Former Tennessee standout Raven Chavanne hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning Sunday to end the United States' softball opener in the Pan American Games in Toronto. Her blast gave the U.S. a 9-2 run-rule victory over Puerto Rico. Another Tennessee alumna, Lauren Gibson, singled and scored in the third inning. The United States beat Brazil 7-0 on Monday, when Chavanne was 2-for-3 and started a five-run third inning with a single, and will face Canada tonight.
