Tennessee Wesleyan wins in NAIA nationals

The eighth-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan women's basketball team opened play Wednesday evening in the NAIA Division II national tournament in Sioux City, Iowa, with a 62-45 victory over Southeastern from Florida. Jenna Adams had 13 points and 17 rebounds and Shira Buley and Melanie Barker each had 13 points and seven rebounds for TWC (29-3), Buley with six assists. The Lady Bulldogs, seeded second in their part of the bracket with Southeastern seventh, led only 27-25 at halftime but held the Fire (25-7) to 2-of-13 3-point shooting after that. TWC faces defending champion Saint Francis of Indiana at 4:30 p.m. EDT Friday in the Tyson Events Center. Bryan College, which finished second to Wesleyan in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, plays this afternoon against Concordia of Nebraska.

* Dalton State finished sixth in the final NAIA Division I men's poll of the 2014-15 basketball season and will play the first game of the national tournament next Wednesday at 10 a.m. EDT at Kansas City, Mo. The Roadrunners (27-4) will open against Wiley (21-11) from Texas.

Tennis

* The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team picked up a road win Wednesday at Stetson, 4-3. The Mocs (9-2) opened the day by winning the doubles point for the 10th time this season, with Kayla Jones and Samantha Caswell winning at No. 1 while Kelsey Coots and Kaylene Chadwell won at No. 2. In singles, UTC got wins from Coots, Chadwell and Claire Mulyadi for the win. Coots broke the 3-3 team tie in the final match with a 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 win over Stetson's Isabella Fernandez.

* Arts & Sciences graduate Jackson Lenoir of Milligan College pulled out a 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-3), 10-6 tennis victory Wednesday against Quincy University in a tournament at Hilton Head Island, S.C. Lenoir is a junior with the Buffaloes.

Baseball

* Wofford College senior outfielder James Plaisted from Tullahoma, Tenn., was the General Shale Southern Conference student-athlete of the week after batting .467 with a .667 slugging percentage in the Terriers' 3-1 week. He scored six runs and batted in four in the four games and is hitting .381 with three homers and 10 RBIs for the season. A biology major, he has a 3.57 grade point average and is set for University of Tennessee dental school this fall.

* Cleveland State has moved its TCCAA baseball and softball weekend series against Southwest Tennessee from Friday and Saturday to Sunday and Monday. The baseball teams are set for a doubleheader Sunday starting at 2 p.m. and a single nine-inning game Monday at 1; softball doubleheaders will be at 2 p.m. Sunday and noon Monday.

Golf

* Dalton State golfer Erika Wardzinski tied for fifth individually at 152 and the Roadrunners were sixth out of 14 teams in the Seminole State Spring Break Tournament that ended Wednesday in Lake Mary, Fla. Host Seminole State won with a 610, and NCAA Division I members Appalachian State, USC Upstate, Gardner-Webb and Wofford finished ahead of NAIA member DSC, which with a 647 finished one stroke behind the Terriers and one ahead of another D-I team, Radford. Dalton State's Julia McQuilken and Caroline Griffin shared 18th and 23rd places at 161 and 162.

Equestrian

* After winning the high point team title for the fourth time in five shows Sunday at the IHSA Murray State event, the Sewanee equestrian team was the Zone 5 Region 1 reserve champion. The Tigers are hosting the Zone 5 Region 1 finals this Friday, starting at 2 p.m. CDT. Sewanee's Iris Harrison reigns as the region high point rider after finishing first to teammate Hannah Adams' second in open flat at Murray State. Harrison has qualified for the Cacchione Cup at the IHSA nationals in May. Lindsay Stevenson in intermediate flat, Madison Baugh in advanced walk/trot/canter and Kimberly Williams in walk/trot were other Sewanee riders winning Sunday. Kathryn Miller was second in intermediate flat, Emily Guest and Miller were second and third in novice over fences, Leslie Goodman was third in novice flat and Mallory Wright was third in beginner walk/trot/canter.
