UTC adds three soccer signees

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga soccer team recently added three new players to the 2015 signing class. Hannah Durden of Harrisonburg (Va.) High, Rachel Lindsey of Hardin Valley Academy in Knoxville and Karsyn Sewell of Collierville (Tenn.) High will join new coach Gavin McKinney's team and brings his first signing class to 10 players. Durden is the daughter of UTC football defensive coordinator Jeff Durden and a four-year varsity midfielder and a three-time all-district performer heading into her senior season. Lindsey is a four-year starter at center midfield, and she helped lead Hardin Valley to an 18-2-2 record in 2014. Sewell was named to the Commercial Appeal Best of Preps in 2013 and 2014 and is a two-time defensive MVP for Collierville.

Softball

* Eighth-ranked Chattanooga State won 12-0 and lost 2-1 against visiting Georgia Perimeter in a junior college softball doubleheader Wednesday. Hanna Manley allowed two hits over three innings of the five-inning first game, and Morgan Boggess and Erica Webster each threw an inning. Katie Scott went 1-for-2 with a grand slam, five RBIs and two runs, and Courtney Styles also hit a grand slam for the Lady Tigers (20-8). In the second game, Sharlene Godoy had seven strikeouts over five innings and allowed just three hits, but she took the loss after allowing two runs (one earned). Katy Richardson went 2-for-3.

* Covenant won 8-5 and lost 11-6 against visiting Maryville in USA South softball Wednesday. Madison Quirk's grand slam highlighted the Lady Scots' five-run third inning in game one, and Jordan Brett went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs while Shannon Schmitt was 2-for-3. Cris Gant held on for the complete-game win with eight strikeouts. In the loss, Joni Johnson was 3-for-4 and matched Jami Johnson's two RBIs.

* Former Heritage High School standout Allison Vaughn was batting .346 with four RBIs and five runs scored for the Piedmont College softball team going into Wednesday's USA South doubleheader against LaGrange, when she was 1-for-3 and scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh in a 3-2 win in the first game of a split. She was 5-for-13 last weekend in four games against William Peace and Methodist.

Baseball

* The Tennessee Wesleyan baseball team followed up Monday's 12-1 and 6-5 Appalachian Athletic Conference home wins over Montreat with a 9-5 nonconference victory Wednesday against visiting Lindsey Wilson. Wardy Polanco was 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Chase Edwards and Cody Hiefnar also had two hits each, and Polanco, Edwards, Jordan Garrett and Ridge Hoopi-Haslam homered for Wesleyan (18-6), ranked 16th in the NAIA poll. It was the 406th career win for coach Billy Berry in his 10 seasons at the Athens school, against 160 losses and a tie. Hoopi-Haslam is the reigning AAC player of the week, after going 9-for-13 with four doubles, four stolen bases, four runs scored and two RBIs in three games. He's batting .442 with six home runs, three triples, 10 doubles, 21 RBIs, 27 runs and 10 steals in 11 attempts.

* The Tennessee Temple baseball team lost 6-2 and 10-1 Wednesday at Milligan. In defeat for the Crusaders (8-4), Nico McElrath was 2-for-2 and Hunter Brown drove in both runs in the first game, and Caden Shadrick was 3-for-3 in game two.

* Tony Dykes hit a two-run homer and followed a three-run single by Michael Walker with an RBI double as Sewanee scored eight runs in the second inning Tuesday on the way to an 11-5 baseball win over Springfield (Mass.) in Auburndale, Fla. Nathaniel Howard was 3-for-5 with a triple and Walker was 2-for-4, and Jack Whaley matched Walker with two runs scored. Mike O'Neil pitched all nine innings, striking out seven. Wednesday evening, the Tigers rose to 7-7 with a 6-1 defeat of Colby-Sawyer in Winter-Haven, as Brad Basham pitched six of the nine innings, allowing six hits, and Ben Clune, Tyler Minkkinen, Blake Bays and Drew Mancuso each went 2-for-4. Clune had two RBIs, Mancuso scored twice and Minkkinen drove in a run and scored two.

Lacrosse

* Washington & Lee, ranked 14th in NCAA Division III, defeated visiting Sewanee 7-2 in men's lacrosse Wednesday night, dropping the Tigers to 4-2. Robbie Berndt scored for Sewanee and assisted on the other goal, by George Bukawyn, and goalie Selby Austin made 14 saves.

Tennis

* The Sewanee tennis teams continued their successful trip to California with victories Wednesday against Salisbury, the 14th-ranked Sewanee women winning 9-0 and the guys prevailing 7-2. The Sewanee men (7-4) won two doubles matches and Avery Schober, Eric Roddy, Rand Jackson, Scott Gallimore and Connor Winkler won in singles. Bronte Goodhue, Christina Merchant, Clementina Davila, Maggie Crumbliss, Annie Veron and Taylor Childress were the singles victors for the female Tigers (8-3).

Golf

* Lee University finished 12th out of 15 teams at 933 for 54 holes at the Barry Women's Invitational golf tournament Monday and Tuesday at Miami Lakes, Fla. Lee's Sam Burrus tied for 19th individually with a 225.

* The Georgia Northwestern men's golf team took a four-shot lead Monday with a first-round 290 in the SCAD-Atlanta Spring Invitational at The Oaks Course at Covington, Ga., but finished fourth out of eight teams after a 308 on Tuesday. NAIA four-year schools Faulkner, Point and Reinhardt finished first through third at 585, 590 and 591. GNTC's Jordan Estes tied for ninth individually at 148, teammates Grant Allen and Lanier Guest shared 14th place at 149 and Chase Cole tied for 18th at 150.

Running

* Geno Phillips won the First Volunteer GraduRun 5k last Saturday in Ringgold in 16 minutes, 37 seconds, and Jessica Marlier was the women's winner in 18:52 and in the top five with masters winner Dean Thompson (16:49), Ryan Shrum (18:41) and Phillip Williams (18:51). Jennifer Curtis was the second female finisher and 10th overall. The 65 Roses 5k in Cleveland is set for March 28, beginning and ending at Lee University's Paul Conn Student Union.
