Georgia conducts first spring scrimmage

Georgia held its first football scrimmage of the spring Saturday afternoon at Sanford Stadium.

Bulldogs coach Mark Richt provided statistics afterward but not much of a verdict.

"It's hard to rate because you've got three units going on both sides of the ball," Richt said. "If the offense does something good, it's not that great for the defense on that particular play. It's the same way if the defense does something good.

"We're seven days in. We've had our first scrimmage, so we have a lot of great film to watch. I thought the guys competed pretty hard."

After announcing Thursday that sophomore tailback Sony Michel is missing the rest of spring with a shoulder injury, Richt implied that redshirt junior tailback Keith Marshall may not be doing much for a while. After rushing for 759 yards and 6.5 yards per carry in 2012, Marshall tore his ACL in the fifth game of the 2013 season at Tennessee.

Marshall was back on the field at the start of last season but injured his ankle and knee in the third game against Troy and didn't play again. He had just 12 carries for 24 yards in 2014 but qualified for a redshirt season.

"He's got a hamstring issue now," Richt said. "Some of those are worse than others."

Redshirt sophomore A.J. Turman, who's dealt with his share of injuries since signing with Georgia in 2013, led all rushers Saturday with 15 carries for 87 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore Nick Chubb played only in third-down situations and did not have any statistics.

Chubb rushed for 1,547 yards last season, nearly doubling the rest of Georgia's returning rushers.

"We wanted to focus on his pass protection and route running and things like that," Richt said.

As for the quarterbacks, redshirt sophomore Brice Ramsey completed 16 of 32 passes for 232 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Redshirt junior Faton Bauta completed 17 of 30 passes for 247 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, while redshirt freshman Jacob Park completed 4 of 7 for 187 yards and a score.

Richt said Park's excessive yardage on so few completions was the result of some long-ball drills when the third-team units competed.

"There were flashes by all of them at times when they dropped back, knew exactly what to do and threw a perfect strike," Richt said. "There were a couple of other plays where you would shake your head."

Senior inside linebacker Jake Ganus, who played his first three seasons at UAB before transferring after the Blazers program was shut down in December, had 10 tackles and a 27-yard interception return. Richt said Ganus and fellow newcomer Chuks Amaechi, who played this past fall at Arizona Western College, worked Saturday with the second team.

Richt said sophomore Isaiah Wynn worked as the first-team center and junior flanker Blake Tibbs would miss the rest of spring with a shoulder injury.
