Dalton State won both the men's and women's championships at the Southern States Athletic Conference cross country meet Friday at Clinton, Miss., and the Roadrunners' Emily Poole and Natalie Hensley were first and second in the women's 5-kilometer race in 18:29.52 and 19:11.45. The male Roadrunners finished second, third, fifth, seventh and eighth individually in the 8k, with Spencer Head (25:56.48), Paul Patterson, Paul Schupp, Parker Cook and Brody Cook in that order earning all-conference honors and Dylan Smith finishing 11th. Dalton State had 25 points to 71 for runner-up Bethel. The women's SSAC title was their second in a row, but Blue Mountain was close behind with 40 points to the Roadrunners' 36. Dalton State had the first, second, eighth, 11th and 14th finishers with Mallory Edwards, Olivia Bird and Jessica Brock joining Poole and Hensley with All-SCAC placements and Kuersten Gallivan and Gloria Pascual close behind in 15th and 17th.

Soccer

' The Lee University women's soccer team pulled out a 4-3 penalty-kicks margin to advance past West Florida in the Gulf South Conference tournament semifinals Friday in Florence, Ala., after a 3-3 draw through 20 minutes of overtime. The Lady Flames (11-4-3) will face either top-seeded host North Alabama or third seed West Alabama in Sunday's championship match. Lee took three one-goal leads on assists by McKenzie Bricker during regulation, with scores by Kinsey Cichowitz, Lauren Peters and Summer Lanter - the last two on headers off corner kicks - and West Florida's last tying shot came in the final seconds of regulation. Peters, Laura Thacker, Meagan Newman and Suzanne Arant made Lee's PKs in the shootout.

' Sewanee lost 4-3 to Rhodes on penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie through overtime Friday night in the Southern Athletic Association women's soccer tournament semifinals in Danville, Ky. Host Centre earlier beat Berry 4-0 and is 16-1-1 going into Sunday's championship match. Katie Anderson gave Sewanee (11-3-3) a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into its game, but Aly Hoyt equalized in the 62nd minute for the Lynx (11-5-2), who were outshot 15-11 and outcornered 7-3. After a brilliant save by senior Tigers goalkeeper Olivia Glascoe in the closing seconds of overtime, Sewanee netted PKs on its second, third and fifth tries, but Addie Fargason then clinched the advancement for Rhodes. The SAA men's semifinals in Jackson, Miss., were postponed Friday because of severe weather. Sewanee will face Rhodes at 3:30 p.m. EST.

' Tournament host William Carey ended Dalton State's first season of men's soccer with a 6-0 victory Friday in the Southern States Athletic Conference event at Hattiesburg, Miss. It was 2-0 at halftime. "We had a great first year," Roadrunners coach Kerem Daser said in a DSC release. "We qualified for conference in the first season. It was a tough loss, and I give credit to Coach Barry Farrell and William Carey. They were the better team tonight." No. 2 seed Martin Methodist won 4-0 over Middle Georgia State, and No. 3 seed Bethel nipped Faulker 4-3.

Golf

' Lee University's Caroline Moore was named the Gulf South Conference women's golfer of the month for October, the league announced Friday. Moore was the medalist as the Lady Flames won the North Georgia LeeAnn Nobles Memorial tournament after she finished second in their victory in their own Lee Lady Flames Shootout. The team is ranked No. 16 in NCAA Division II by GolfStat.

Basketball

' Jorden Williams from Chattanooga scored 20 points with six 3-point baskets and Cody Jones had 15 with five 3s for NCAA Division III member Sewanee in its 91-64 men's basketball exhibition loss Thursday night at Division I team Austin Peay. Brody Stone added 11 points and six rebounds for the Tigers. Preseason all-conference selection Chris Horton had 24 points and 10 rebounds for the Governors.
