Dryden, Cox lead Covenant over Oglethorpe

The Covenant College men's basketball team improved to 3-0 for the season with an 82-69 NCAA Division III win Saturday at Oglethorpe.

Berto Dryden made five of six 3-point shots and totaled 21 points with three steals for the Scots, while TJ Cox had 17 points with three 3s and eight assists and Chris Boyd contributed 12 rebounds with 12 points.

Oglethorpe won the women's game 73-60 as Lauren Ransom had 18 points and 13 rebounds. For Covenant (1-2), Kaley Hallmark scored 11 points and Joanna Smith and Aleigha Williams tallied 10 each, Smith with 15 rebounds.

In NAIA Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheaders, Bryan College and Tennessee Wesleyan swept road games at Reinhardt and Truett-McConnell, respectively. The Bryan women (8-0, 2-0) won 80-63 before the Lions (4-3, 1-1) won 88-79, and the TWC women (1-2, 1-1) romped 74-48 before the Bulldogs (3-1, 1-1) won 92-76.

* Sewanee 67, Blackburn 50: At Sewanee in the Lon Varnell Classic, the Tigers improved to 3-1 going into a Thanksgiving break as Jorden Williams scored 16 points and Brody Stone had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Keshonn Carter added 10 points. Stone was voted the Classic MVP with Williams also making all-tournament.

* Sewanee (w) 68, Roanoke 64: At Salem, Va., freshman all-tournament point guard Bella Taylor scored 17 points as the Tigers edged the host team of the Jean Beamer Holiday Classic. Two other freshmen, Corey Caulder and Katie Wayne, added 14 and 12 points and senior Jamie Chauvin had 10 for Sewanee (3-2).

* Carver 76, Lee 66: At Cleveland, Brannon Hopkins scored 27 points and Saveyon Edwards and Jamil Saaka had 19 apiece as Carver improved to 5-7. Chase Cullen and Rantavious Gilbert had 16 and 10 points and seven rebounds each for the Flames (1-2), who got eight rebounds from Jervon Johnson.

* Bellarmine (w) 84, Lee 76: At Cleveland, Sarah Galvin and Destony Curry scored 21 and 19 points and Galvin's 11-of-12 free-throw showing led a 36-for-49 showing for the visitors from Mississippi, compared to Lee's 18-of-22. Erin Walsh scored 21 points and Carrie Cheeks had 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting plus eight rebounds and four blocked shots for the Lady Flames (2-2).

* Dalton State 91, William Carey 59: At Dalton, Ga., Marcel Hawkins scored 21 points and Jordan Bowling had 19 points and 12 rebounds in the Roadrunners' SSAC win. Jamaine Burrey had 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists and Deshawn Ruffin scored 10 points for DSC (4-2, 2-0).

* Chattanooga State 94, Volunteer State 81: At Gallatin, Tenn., the Tigers rebounded from a 77-60 defeat Friday at Motlow as Larry Spicer scored 23 points and DaV Moore and Develyn Williams each scored 18, Moore with 13 rebounds.

* Chattanooga State (w) 73, Volunteer State 63: The Lady Tigers also lost at Motlow, 80-69, but bounced back behind Teondra Crawford's 20 points and nine assists and 17 points from Kaela Patrick. Sydney Sims added 14.

* Motlow 62, Cleveland State 57: At Tullahoma, Dontrell Whitaker had 13 points and 12 rebounds in the Cougars' TCCAA loss after registering 13 and 11 in Friday's 76-72 win at Vol State. In that game, Javel Gillespie scored 22 points with 6-of-9 3-point shooting for the Cougars (4-6, 3-2), and Q.D. Cox hit clutch late free throws among his 10 points.

* Cleveland State (w) 58, Motlow 44: The Lady Cougars rose to 9-1, 6-0 in the TCCAA, as JLynn Majors and Leisa Butler scored 15 and 14 points and Jaclyn Griffith added 10. Majors hit 10 of 12 free throws and scored 22 points in Friday's 68-58 win victory at Vol State.
