Craine carries load against Rams, old mate Ham

The game between Craine and his University of Tennessee at Chattanooga teammates against Ham and his Fordham fellows had long been decided before the picture was taken. UTC won 50-20 in an opening-round game of the FCS playoffs.

"I texted him earlier this week, 'See you Saturday,'" said Craine, who is a year older than his friend from Union Grove High School in McDonough, Ga. "He hit me back with, 'Bring your best.'"

Ham, a sophomore defensive back for the Rams, witnessed Craine bringing his best, churning for every yard possible even after the Rams seemed to stop him. Ham was in on 12 total tackles, and Craine ran for 154 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries as the UTC coaching staff used him as a battering ram to help accumulate 28 first downs.

"Today was straight business," said Craine, an All-Southern Conference first-team selection whose longest run of the day covered 19 yards. "The offensive line created some seams and that allowed me to put my foot in the ground and get vertical. Whenever you get that, you start seeing those longer 7-, 8-yard runs."

Caught in Webb

Sophomore safety Lucas Webb continued to etch his name in the UTC record book.

With a 71-yard interception return in the second quarter, Webb scored the third pick-six of his career. It also marked the ninth interception he's made in 25 college games.

His first scoring interception came last year against Jacksonville State - whom the Mocs will play next Saturday. He also scored a touchdown this season by returning a pickoff 35 yards against Furman.

Saturday, a pass across the middle landed right in his lap, and none of the Rams' offensive players were in position to stop him from scoring.

"Coaches called for a blitz and the linebackers did a good job getting there," Webb said. "Then the quarterback threw a quick pass right to me. It was like I was catching a pass from the JUGS gun."

Bagley busts one

UTC running back Richardre Bagley had seemingly been one step away from breaking a long gain in almost every game this season. He found that break Saturday.

Bagley, a sophomore, set a career high with a 38-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. It could have been longer, but the end zone limited his potential.

His previous career high was a 27-yard run at VMI this season. Bagley did not have a carry in the second half Saturday, when former McCallie star Alex Trotter, a freshman, rushed six times for 20 yards.

Drive for dough

UTC quarterback Jacob Huesman has been known to hit the links during the offseason, and he plans a tee time for Monday at the Bear Trace at Harrison Bay.

He can't hit a drive as far as Bubba Watson or even as far as former UTC quarterback B.J. Coleman, but he led the Mocs on two long drives Saturday.

For the first time in the Coach Russ Huesman era, the Mocs had two scoring possessions of at least 90 yards in the same game. UTC covered 97 yards on its opening drive and 90 yards just before halftime.

A golf shot of 90 yards is a simple pitching-wedge shot for Jacob Huesman.

"I try to control a 90-yard shot with my backswing," he said.

One 90-yard drive on the football field is more impressive than a shot on the green, and two 90-plus football drives are almost as good as holing out from the fairway.

Two special points

UTC sophomore linebacker Dale Warren blocked a fourth-quarter punt off the foot of Joe Pavlik and swatted it out of the back of the end zone.

Warren burst through the protection, slapped the kick with two hands and made a dive to try to recover the ball, but he couldn't corral it. The two points put UTC ahead 43-14 early in the fourth quarter.

UTC hadn't recorded a safety since playing at Oklahoma in 2008.

Fourth-and-go

The Rams faced fourth-and-1 from their own 34-yard line on the first possession of the game.

They didn't flinch in their decision to go for the first down. It worked out with Chase Edmonds earning the first down. The drive stalled and the Rams had to punt, but the message had been sent: They're willing to roll the dice.

UTC went for it on fourth down later in the quarter, needing 2 yards at the Fordham 49. Derrick Craine earned the first down with a 6-yard run.

The Rams essentially were forced to go for it on fourth-and-1 early in the second quarter when they were down 21-0. It didn't work. Vantrell McMillan swallowed up Jarred Brevard in the backfield to keep UTC ahead 21-0.
