First-place volleyball Mocs fall 3-2 at UNCG

The first-place University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team lost a tense five-set Southern Conference match Friday night at UNC Greensboro. The set scores were 25-18, 22-25, 26-24, 17-25, 15-12 in favor of the Spartans (16-8, 6-3). Lauren Greenspoon had 58 assists while Kristy Wieser and Sarah Batterton each had 15 kills and Briana Reid had 13 kills and 18 digs for the Mocs (18-4, 7-2), now tied with Furman for the top spot. Allie Davenport also had 13 kills and Catherine Chason and Rachel Petkosh had 22 and 19 digs. For UNCG, Allison Penner had 64 assists and Jessica Brezwyn, Ashley Muench and Jasmine Jones had 18, 17 and 15 kills.

* Although Silvia Sartori had a match-high 14 kills and Catherine Conley added 10, Lee University lost 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-22) to visiting North Alabama in Gulf South Conference volleyball Friday night. Hillary Hoffpauir had 29 assists for Lee (8-13, 4-8), and Stephanie Hernandez had 12 digs.

* First-place Bryan College and sixth-place Tennessee Wesleyan won Appalachian Athletic Conference home volleyball matches Friday against the teams tied for fourth. Interestingly, Bryan had the tougher time. The Lady Lions (20-13, 14-2) won 3-1 (20-25, 25-17, 27-25, 25-21) over St. Andrews while Wesleyan (10-12, 8-7) was rolling 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-15) over Columbia.

Softball

* Silverdale Baptist Academy's Emily Harkleroad has committed as a junior to continue her softball career at Austin Peay State University. With two high school seasons to go, she has a career batting average of .363 and an earned run average of 2.20. "Emily was recruited by several schools, but Austin Peay was the best fit for her academically and athletically," SBA softball coach and athletic director Tim Couch said. "Emily is a very versatile player who can play third base, shortstop, second base, pitcher and any outfield position. She has the best hand-eye coordination of any player I have seen. She has an uncanny talent for anticipating, reacting and making difficult plays look routine. Emily is very strong for her size and has excellent quickness and a strong arm. She is a fierce competitor and tireless worker."

Soccer

* UTC lost 2-0 Friday night in SoCon women's soccer at Western Carolina. That dropped the Mocs to 3-12-2, 1-6-1 in the conference. Sayres McKenna assisted on a Kimberly Sullivan goal at 50:13 and scored from a Markie Studnicky assist three minutes later for WCU (7-7-3, 3-4-1).

* The Lee University soccer teams split their Gulf South games Friday against Christian Brothers, with a 3-0 win for the Lady Flames (9-4-2, 8-2) but a 2-1 loss for the 11th-ranked Flames (10-3-2, 5-1-1). In the women's game, Kinsey Cichowitz scored late in the first half from a rebound of a Mia Hollingsworth shot, and McKenzie Bricker assisted on second-half goals by Summer Lanter and Lauren Peters; Erin Olson had five saves in the shutout. In the men's game, the Flames' Robbie Cutchin opened the scoring with an assist from Quade Marinell in the 68th minute, but Xavi Lao scored for Christian Brothers (11-4, 4-3) in the 79th minute and again as time was running out.

* The Covenant College women's soccer team recorded its fourth consecutive shutout with a 2-0 win Friday at Averett, and the Covenant men completed the USA South sweep with a 1-0 victory. Natalie Smith and Summer Bader scored in the 75th and 90th minutes for the Lady Scots (9-4, 7-3), with assists from Andrea Hunt and Christy Barton, and Bailee Brown made 13 saves for Averett (2-10-2, 2-7-1). Michael Arango scored from a Carl Simakoff assist 10 minutes into the men's game, and Daniel Kubin had 10 saves as Covenant (4-9-2, 3-3-2) held on despite being outshot 25-9.

* Tyler Edell's goal from a Martha Dinwiddie pass in the 58th minute held up for a 1-0 women's soccer win for Sewanee over visiting Berry on Friday. Sewanee is 10-3-2, 6-0-1 in the Southern Athletic Association; Berry is 9-4-1, 4-2. Freshman Steven Moore scored both goals as the Berry men won 2-0 over Sewanee (5-11-1, 1-6). Berry is 7-6-2, 3-3.

Tennis

* The UTC men's tennis team is wrapping up fall play this weekend in the Georgia Southern Invitational. The Mocs have seven players entered in singles and three doubles teams.
