Volleyball Mocs stretch streak to seven

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball winning streak went to seven Saturday as the Mocs edged Virginia Tech 3-2 and beat Middle Tennessee State 3-1 in Virginia Tech's Hokie Invitational tournament.

The win over the hosts (by 20-25, 25-21, 13-25, 26-24, 17-15) was the first for UTC against a power-five conference team since a 3-2 defeat of North Carolina State in 2004. Briana Reid and Sarah Batterton each had 15 kills and Lauren Gainer, Kristy Wieser and Allie Davenport added nine, eight and seven against the Hokies (8-3) for the Mocs (11-2), who got 50 assists and 11 digs from Lauren Greenspoon and 18, 17 and 16 digs from Reid, Catherine Chason and Miranda Elpers.

In the 22-25, 25-19, 25-14, 27-25 defeat of MTSU (3-12), Wieser registered 17 kills and Reid and Davenport contributed 12 and 11, while Greenspoon had 48 assists and Elpers and Chason each came up with 21 digs. Batterton was in on six blocks.

* At Florence, Ala., Lee lost 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-18) in Gulf South play to North Alabama (9-2, 3-0). Silvia Sartori had 11 kills, Brooke Wilsman had seven and Sadie Johnson had 15 assists for Lee (4-3, 0-2).

* On Lookout Mountain, Covenant won 3-0 against USA South visitors Huntingdon and LaGrange. The Lady Scots (3-6, 2-1) beat Huntingdon 25-15, 25-18, 25-16 as Ginny Moore had 14 kills and 11 digs, Chelsea VanDyk made 12 kills and Schuyler Moore set 31 assists. In the 25-14, 25-8, 25-14 rout of LaGrange, Ginny Moore led with eight kills, Schuyler Moore had 25 assists, VanDyk served four aces and Ariana Buchanan had 14 digs.

* At Memphis, Maggie Stanford, Diamond Stewart and Caroline Montgomery had 12, 11 and 10 kills as Sewanee outlasted Rhodes 3-2 (25-22, 25-20, 14-25, 23-25, 15-11) in a Southern Athletic Association match. Montgomery also was in on seven blocks, Stewart made 18 digs, Walker Buxton had 36 assists and 14 digs and Peyton Parent had 22 digs and three aces for Sewanee (8-3, 1-1).

* At Columbia, S.C., Bryan College improved to 5-0 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, 8-9 overall, with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-21) win over Columbia College. And Tennessee Wesleyan (5-5, 3-2) rallied to win 3-2 (19-25, 18-25, 25-19, 25-10, 15-13) at St. Andrews.
