Sophomore setter Lauren Greenspoon of the streaking University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team was named Southern Conference offensive player of the week. She totaled 172 assists in four wins as the Mocs improved to 11-2 for the program's best season start since 1986. She had 50 assists with 11 digs in a victory over the host team at Virginia Tech's Hokie Invitational. "Lauren has been exceptional all season," coach Travis Filar said in a UTC release. "Our passers know she will get to every second ball, and our attackers know they will get a hittable ball in a great location. That's a huge confidence factor for our team." UTC hosts UNC Greensboro and Western Carolina in SoCon matches Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m.

* Covenant College sophomore outside hitter Ginny Moore was the USA South volleyball player of the week after averaging 4.5 kills and 3.1 digs per set in a 2-1 week for the Lady Scots. She had 23 kills, 14 digs and two aces in the loss, 3-2 at Maryville, and she had 14 kills and 11 digs in a 3-0 defeat of Huntingdon. She played only two sets in a 3-0 win over LaGrange and had eight kills, six digs and three aces.

Auto Racing

* Kevin Rodden of Cleveland won the $2,500 first prize in the Super Pro class with a perfect final run Saturday night at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip. After his supercharged dragster broke down, he drove his 1977 Vega to victory with a 6.00-second run on a 6.00 dial. Steve Dowdy was second with a 4.78-second burst on a 4.77 dial in his Chevy dragster. Matt Caheely won the 550 class with Tracy Cochran second, and Randy Womack was first with Jerry Bryant second in the 600 class. Strip Hall of Famer L.C. Bigham won the Foot Brake class with Stan Curvin second, and Bella Boatman won in Junior Dragster with Miles Walters second.

Golf

* Led by sophomore Stuart Thomas' third-place 140 (70-70) individually, the UTC men's golf team is tied with Iowa State for fourth place at 580 - 13 shots behind leader James Madison - going into today's final round of the Janney VCU Shootout at the Country Club of Virginia's Tuckahoe Creek Course. East Carolina and VCU are at 576. UTC shot 283 in the first round. The Mocs' Andrew Weathers and Brooks Thomas are at 146 and 147 after opening with a 70 and a 69, respectively, and Wes Gosselin is at 149.

* UTC's women golfers are ninth out of 14 teams after Monday's 36 holes in the Mercedes-Benz Championships at Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville. The Mocs are at 589, three shots behind eighth-place Illinois. Kent State leads at 563 with Iowa State at 564 and host Tennessee third at 567. UTC's Emily McLennan is tied for 13th individually at 143 (72-71) with Cris Perez tied for 20th at 146 (71-75), Megan Woods at 149 and Sarah Dolmovich at 151. Tennessee's Blakesly Warren from Chattanooga is tied for 20th with three teammates in the top 10.

* Lee University leads the 16-team Cougar Invitational men's golf tournament at Columbus, Ga., after a 563 total in the first two rounds (281-281). Host Colubmus State is second at 566. Lee's Taylor Davis is second individually by a stroke at 138, and teammate Peyton Sliger is tied for third at 139. Adam Wright shares 12th at 142.

* With senior Emily Javadi from Chattanooga sharing first place at 150, the Sewanee women's golf team was fifth out of 12 teams in the Dan Quayle Collegiate Classic that ended Sunday at Deer Creek Golf Club at Clayton, Ind. The Tigers' Meghan Symonds tied for 23rd at 165, and Sarah Battye, Sophia Morrill and Alison Eleey shot 169s.

Running

* Covenant freshman Micah Sneller was the USA South's men's cross country rookie runner of the week after leading the Scots in a meet for the second time in a row. His 8k time of 29:48.7 was 72nd out of 147 men in the North Georgia Invitational.
