Defending champion Trent Mansfield had another very good round Saturday in the first day of the 2016 Brainerd Invitational golf tournament, almost matching his two 66s from last year with a 67. But Mikey Feher leads him by two shots going into today's final 18 holes. Feher's 65 led eight players in the 60s in the main division at Brainerd Golf Course. Matt Jenne and David Watts are tied for third at 68 and Matt Crowder, Jay Potter, Taylor Lewis and Richard Spangler are at 69, one shot ahead of Jacob Bailey and Jimmy White III. Mitch Hufstetler shot a 66 to lead the Senior division, while Mike Poe shot 68 and Scott Patton and Bret Douglas carded 70s. Brian Ghormley has a six-point lead in the Stableford division.

Fishing

* Dayton Boat Dock operator Michael Neal goes into the final day of the Walmart FLW Tour's 2016 Forrest Wood Cup out of Huntsville, Ala., on Wheeler Lake in third place at 37 pounds, 14 ounces after a 12-0 total for his five keeper bass Saturday. John Cox of DeBary, Fla., led for the third day in a row at 43-5 after a weigh-in of 11-0, but Todd Auten of Lake Wylie, S.C., brought in 17-10 and is a close second at 42-12. Bryan Thrift of Shelby, N.C., is one ounce behind Neal. The winner of the 10 finalists will get $300,000.

* Samuel and Matthew Vandagriff of Warren County High School in McMinnville, Tenn., wound up seventh in the Costa Bassmaster high school national tournament on Kentucky and Barkley lakes, while Legacy High students Ryan Wood and Turner Mason from the Front Range Bass Club in Colorado won with 16 pounds, 11 ounces Saturday and a 49-4 three-day total. The event began Thursday with 175 boats representing 35 states and Ontario and closed out with 12 duos from 10 states. The Vandagriff brothers, who were second after day one, had a 10-7 haul Saturday for a 43-15 total, two pounds out of fourth place. Winner Wood is a former B.A.S.S. youth national champion who was on the 2016 Bassmaster High School All-American team, but he and Mason failed to catch a keeper bass in the 2015 nationals.

Soccer

* The Lee University women's soccer team was picked this past week to win the Gulf South Conference in the upcoming season after sharing the regular-season title and being the GSC tournament runner-up in 2015, and the Lady Flames' Summer Lanter, McKenzie Bricker and Kinsey Cichowitz made the 12-player preseason all-conference team. Lanter, a junior from Soddy-Daisy, scored 10 goals last season. Lee junior David Perez from Northwest Whitfield (and the Chattanooga Football Club), the 2015 GSC men's player of the year with 17 goals and five assists, was on the preseason All-GSC men's team, but the Flames were fifth in the coaches' voting. Reigning champion West Alabama was picked to win again.

Baseball

* Arizona's Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities team beat Chattanooga RBI 15-0 in five innings in their final youth senior division RBI World Series pool game Saturday in Cincinnati, leaving the Chattanoogans 1-2. Luis Tajia was 3-for-4, scored three runs and pitched the last two innings for Arizona, which scored nine runs in the first inning, and Jesser Cervantes brought in at least one run in every plate appearance, totaling a tournament-high five RBIs in the game. Chattanooga had just two hits. Elimination games begin today.

Cycling

* Scott Brannon won the Chattanooga Century 100-mile bicycle race from Coahulla Creek High School on Saturday with a finish of 4 hours, 42 minutes and 10 seconds. Jay Young, Chaz Warren, Tracy Terpstra, Jordan Picchiottino and Jeff Lofgren were in a tight pack from 4:43:58 to 4:44:07 for second through sixth places in the event benefiting Prison Prevention Ministries, and Glynis Hoover was the first female and 26th overall in 6:18:12. Durwood Higgins and Russell Robertson were first and second in the 68-mile option in 3:03:11 and 3:03:29 with Beth Lofgren and Jennifer Fulton ninth and 10th and the leading females in 3:17:58 and 3:18:13, and John and Felicia Watson finished first and second in 1:58:10 and 1:58:11 in the 35-mile race.

Softball

* Coahulla Creek freshman and ProStar Fastpitch softball standout Rayanna "RJ" Janke wound up 10-for-14 with a home run, three doubles, a sacrifice fly and seven RBIs as her 14-under team went 4-2 in the USA Elite Future All-American tournament this past week in Kissimmee, Fla. ProStar's Kaylie Frogge from Heritage High was on the team also but was limited to pitch-calling and base-coaching as she continues her recovery from shoulder surgery.
