Former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga distance running standout Lanni Marchant represented Canada for the second time at this year's Olympics by finishing 24th in the women's marathon Sunday in Rio de Janeiro. Marchant, who grew up in London, Ontario, but now lives in Chattanooga, where she is an attorney, previously was 25th among 37 runners in the 10,000-meter run Friday morning. The gold medalist in Sunday's marathon was Kenya's Jemima Jelagat Sumgong, who completed the 26.2-mile route in 2 hours, 24 minutes and 4 seconds. Eunice Kirwa, representing Bahrain, was nine seconds behind to earn silver, while Ethiopia's Mare Dibaba took bronze with a time of 2:24:30. Marchant's time was 2:33:08, and simply finishing was significant in hot weather that caused some to wilt. Twenty-three of the runners who started the race did not complete it - including one of the favorites, 2015 London Marathon champion Tigist Tufa of Ethiopia - and the final finisher came in with 3:20:20 on the clock. The race also included one of the latest scary and bizarre moments from these Olympics after someone holding a sign jumped over barriers and onto the course about a half mile from the finish with the race's leaders approaching. Police said a 25-year-old woman was facing charges of invading competition venues, The Associated Press reported. Two more athletes with local ties are scheduled to compete in Rio. McCallie School graduate Sean Ryan, who grew up in Hixson, is entered in the 10,000-meter open-water swim on Tuesday. Austria's Christine Wolf, a UTC graduate, is on the list as the women's golf tournament begins Wednesday.

* Sewanee junior punter and safety John Cleveland was named to Lindy's Sports preseason first-team All-America team for NCAA Division III. Cleveland, who's from Fort Worth, Texas, averaged 42.3 yards per punt in 2015 and had 18 fielded or downed inside the 20-yard line. His 82-yard punt against Millsaps was the longest for the season in Division III. He also had 27 tackles and a fumble recovery in 2015. He was the only Southern Athletic Association player named to Lindy's first team.

* Ellie Myrick and Hannah Torbett scored, Kaylin Hermanutz and Catherine Meyer had assists and Melia Correa and Katie Emig were in goal as the UTC women's team beat Belmont 2-0 in exhibition play Sunday at Finley Stadium. The Mocs open the season against Kennesaw State at 7 p.m. Friday at Finley.
