USA gets silver in Sims' last youth fly fishing worlds and more regional sports news

Mason Sims from Chickamauga, Ga., and Gordon Lee High School begins classes Thursday at Lee University, where he is expected to be a key figure on the Cleveland school's first competitive fly fishing team. Sims recently ended his national junior team career with a ninth-place individual finish in the World Youth Fly Fishing Championship, this one in Santiago de Compostela in the northwest corner of Spain, just north of Portugal. This was his fourth time on Team USA, which earned the silver medal after winning gold the previous three times in Ireland, Poland and Vail, Colo. Sims was in the top 10 individually every year he was in the world competition.

Golf

* Randy Bowman from Summerville is in a six-way tie for fourth place at 1-over-par 73 after the first round Tuesday of the 2016 Georgia Senior Championship golf tournament at Braselton's The Legends at Chateau Elan. Marietta residents Chris Hall and Jeff Belk share a three-stroke lead with 69s. Defending champion Doug Hanzel of Savannah is one of the other players at 73.

Soccer

* Joining the Chattanooga FC 05 Premier in the under-12 boys' first division, already reported, as a champion in this past weekend's Chattanooga Fall Invitational tournament were the local Premier Soccer Academy Los Guapos in the U-18/19 boys' second division. And the new PSA Predators, with some players ages 10-12, finished second in the U-14 boys' first division to the Southern Soccer Academy Chelsea 03 Select White from the Atlanta area. At Camp Jordan Park, the Predators lost 3-0 to Chelsea after winning 6-0 over Chattanooga FC 03 South, 6-0 over the River City United Revolution 03 and 3-2 over Chattanooga FC 03 North. Los Guapos won 6-0 over Roswell Santos Blue 99 and 2-1 over SSA Chelsea 99 Select White 2 at Camp Jordan and 3-1 over the Georgia Storm 98 Gold on Sunday at Redoubt.
