George Shuford III, a Central High School baseball and football star who went on to shine in both sports at the University of Tennessee and to officiate Southeastern Conference football games for 22 years, died Sunday morning at the age of 75. He went to Tennessee on a football scholarship and for years held the program's record for longest field goal, kicked in 1963 against Alabama. In baseball he was a team captain as a UT junior and senior and played professionally in the Baltimore Orioles organization. He was voted to the Volunteers' all-century baseball team in 2011. Shuford was a TSSAA official for 50 years and was a former school board and Hamilton County Commission member and Erlanger hospital trustee. Family visitation will be held 2-8 p.m. Wednesday and 1-2 p.m. Thursday at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, where the funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday.

Golf

* Former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golfer Christine Wolf has returned to her home country, Austria, and is getting back to work on the Ladies European Tour, but she provided some comments about her recent Olympics experience in Brazil to a UTC sports information staff member. She opened play at Rio de Janeiro with a 71 and a 2-under-par 69 and finished 43rd at 293 for 72 holes. "It was a great honor to represent Austria in the Olympics, especially since we usually play for ourselves," Wolf said in a UTC release Monday. "I always loved playing in European Team Championships (as an amateur), since it was the only time we got to represent our country. Now being part of the Olympic team brought that honor and feeling of being a part of a team back." She expressed delight in being present at the swimming venue for Michael Phelps' 23rd Olympic gold medal, and top-ranked tennis player Novak Djokovic "walked past" her and her caddie while they "were playing some tennis, and he commented on our game." Now, Wolf said, "I am really excited to get back on tour and focus on the rest of my season. So far it was a bit different out there, since we always had the Olympics in mind. Now it is time to refocus and get my card for next year." In addition to trying to secure her LET card for 2017, Wolf said she will be playing LPGA tour school.

Soccer

* Dalton State College suffered its first women's soccer loss Monday, dropping to 2-1 in the program's inaugural season with a 2-1 loss to Trinity Baptist in Jacksonville, Fla. DSC took an early 1-0 lead on Serena Delgado's third goal in three gameS, but the Eagles (1-2) scored twice in the second half and got 10 saves from goalkeeper Tesia Keith. "It was our third match in four days and we were exhausted," Roadrunners coach Kerem Daser said in a school release. "We had many chances and could not score. I give great credit to Coach Prince (Borde) as his Trinity Baptist team was organized and hard-working."
