Around the Region: Lee basketball teams beat Shorter in GSC openers

The Lee University basketball teams both beat visiting Shorter on Saturday in their Gulf South Conference openers for 2016-17, 79-70 in the women's game and 86-70 in the men's. Lindsey Roddy scored 21 points and Abby Bertram had 17 with four 3-point baskets plus six assists for the victorious Lady Flames (5-1), while Carrie Cheeks had 16 points and nine rebounds. Taylor Adams had 31 points and eight rebounds and Raven Fair made five steals for Shorter (1-5). The Shorter men's loss was their first in five games this season and came despite 32 points with five 3s from Phil Taylor. The Flames (4-2) had five double-figure scorers, led by Rico Overall with 19 points. Isaac Merian scored 16 and Keevin Tyus and Jervon Johnson had 14 and 13. Lee will host the Auburn-Montgomery women and North Georgia men on Tuesday, beginning at 6 p.m., with a fundraising emphasis for the families of two Lee lacrosse players whose homes were burned in the Sevier County fires Monday. Donations of cash and gift cards will be appreciated.

* Tennessee Wesleyan won its Appalachian Athletic Conference men's basketball game Saturday against visiting Reinhardt, 82-69, but Reinhardt's women (8-1, 4-1) won 76-55 as Rebecca Cheeks from Sonoraville High School scored 27 points on 10-of-13 shooting and pulled down eight rebounds and Erika Woodfin from Dade County scored 12 points on 4-of-6 3-point success. Madison Walkup and Hunter Simpson scored 15 and 12 points for TWU's Lady Bulldogs. Aundre Reid and QD Cox led the winning Bulldogs with 19 and 18 points while Lenny Pradia had 11 points and eight assists. Keno Jones also scored 11 and Will Gardner had 10 points with nine rebounds in the win.

* Bluefield beat the Bryan College women 67-59 and defeated the Bryan men 74-69 in an AAC doubleheader.

* The Faulkner men's basketball team, ranked 23rd in NAIA Division I, ruined Dalton State's Southern States Athletic Conference opener with an 89-83 defeat of the host Roadrunners on Saturday. Isaiah Box scored 23 points with five 3s for Dalton State (5-1), while Mon'Darius Black and J'Quayveon Williams scored 16 points each and Mike Harden added 13. Di-Mar Hill had 29 points and Lucas Latrell had 20 points and 10 rebounds for Faulkner (5-5, 1-1), which got 15 points from Jose Jimenez.

* The Sewanee basketball teams lost 65-62 in the women's game and 71-63 in the men's in a Southern Athletic Association doubleheader Saturday at Centre. Jorden Williams scored 21 points and Brody Stone had 19 points and eight rebounds for the Sewanee men (4-2, 0-1). Corey Caulder and Bella Taylor scored 15 points apiece for the female Tigers, while Savannah Rose had 14 points and Hannah McCormack had 10 points, five assists and four steals.

* Motlow College beat the Cleveland State men 80-70 and defeated the Lady Cougars 60-51 in TCCAA basketball Saturday. Javion Hamlet had 27 points and seven assists and Isaiah Hart scored 20 points for Motlow's Bucks, while Kevonte Corley and Rashawn Fredericks grabbed 11 and 10 rebounds. Cam Copeland had 20 points and five steals and Tevin Olison scored 19 points for the injury-plagued Cougars (8-2, 4-2). Porchia Turner and Abby Hubert scored 14 and 13 points for the Lady Cougars (7-5, 3-3), and Turner and Keya Jenkins each had 10 rebounds. Sara Vujacic scored 17 points and had 13 for the Lady Bucks, who had won 74-43 at Chattanooga State on Friday. The Chattanooga State women beat Volunteer State on Saturday, when the Chattanooga State men won 81-54.
