Jasmine Joyner probably goes to bed at night and has dreams of playing against Furman.

For Paladins coach Jackie Carson, those are probably nightmares.

The 6-foot-2 center had 19 points, 14 rebounds and five blocked shots, and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's basketball team used a 17-0 first-half run to assume control of the game, going on to win 61-46 in front of 1,785 fans at McKenzie Arena on Thursday.

The Mocs (15-7, 6-2) host Wofford at 2 p.m. Saturday in the first half of a doubleheader at McKenzie.

Keiana Gilbert added 14 points and five assists, while Queen Alford scored 11 as the Mocs won their 39th consecutive SoCon game at home.

"I just try to play hard against them like I do every other conference game," Joyner said. "I came into the game with the mindset they were going to try to box me out more and double-team me, so I was just patient and had to know when to kick the ball out and what moves to do when I had the chance."

In Joyner's last three meetings against Furman - two this season and in the SoCon tournament semifinals last season - she has averaged 22 points, 18 rebounds and 4.7 blocks per game.

She had 14 of her points Thursday in the second half.

"She's a great player. She does a great job," Carson said. "We did a good job of isolating her in the first, but then she elevates her game in the second half. That's what makes her an outstanding player.

"I can't speak more highly of her. She's a player-of-the-year candidate and when the team needs her, she shows up. It would help if we do our job, but there's no stopping a Jasmine Joyner; you can only hope to contain her."

The Mocs hit six 3-pointers - three by Gilbert. While not earth-shattering numbers, they helped open the interior for Joyner to work.

The Mocs outscored Furman 36-24 in points in the paint.

"It is what it is," UTC coach Jim Foster said. "Sometimes it's not pretty, but what I look at is that we're third in the country in fewest fouls committed and we're third in the country in defending the 3-point line. Sometimes people look at the offensive nature of the team, but we're taking care of the basketball and morphing into what we are as we adjust to the players not there."

Furman, the SoCon's top 3-point shooting team, made only 4 of its 19 long-range attempts, shooting 38 percent overall from the floor for the game.

The Paladins led 11-3 early, but UTC took control of the game late in the first quarter and into the second, holding the visitors scoreless for 8:29 of game time and building a nine-point lead in the process. The Mocs led 26-19 at halftime.

"It all started on defense," Gilbert said. "Once we got that going, that helped us out a lot offensively."

Whitney Bunn had 12 points to lead the Paladins. Holli Wilkins added 11 while Kelsey Ellis scored 10.
