Dalton State men move up to No. 2 in NAIA tennis poll and more regional sports news

The Dalton State men's tennis team moved up to No. 2 in the NAIA Top 25 poll this week. The third-year program had been No. 9 in the preseason rankings. "I can't put into words how proud I am of the guys and what they have accomplished in their time at Dalton State," Roadrunners coach Zack Rogers said in a school release. "They have all invested so much of themselves in the program, and I know they, like myself, are both humbled and motivated by this ranking. There is a ton of work and lots of matches yet to be played, but we are blessed to receive this early recognition."

* UTC senior Kayla Jones was chosen the Southern Conference women's tennis player of the week for matches of Feb. 8-14. She won at both No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles in the Mocs' 7-0 defeat of Evansville and is 79th in the latest ITA women's rankings.

Basketball

* Lee University's Erin Walsh was the Gulf South Conference women's basketball player of the week and teammate Haris Price was the freshman of the week. Walsh, recently named to the CoSIDA academic all-district team with a 4.00 grade point average, had 28 and 25 points in the Lady Flames' two games last week and six assists in one. She is third in the GSC with 18.1 points per game. Price scored 15 and 19 points and totaled eight assists and eight rebounds.

* Aleigha Williams scored 13 points, Joanna Smith had 12 plus nine rebounds and Rachel Price added 10 points as Covenant College beat Meredith 55-49 in a USA South women's basketball makeup game Tuesday in Mars Hill, N.C.

* The Reinhardt women's basketball team takes a four-game winning streak into tonight's AAC game at Union College in Kentucky, after heroics from Erika Woodfin from Dade County and Jada Hubbard from Heritage High helped the Lady Eagles rally past Truett-McConnell last Saturday. Rhande Haskett from Ridgeland had game highs of 25 points and 14 rebounds for host TMC, but Reinhardt won 66-65 as Woodfin scored 21 points and Hubbard had 14, including a 3-pointer that tied the score at 64, plus six steals. Woodfin, who was 5-for-7 on 3s, scored the winning basket with 11.7 seconds to go and sealed the victory with her fourth steal.

* The Georgia Northwestern men's basketball team lost its final regular-season game Monday on the road, 85-66 to the LaGrange junior varsity. Darrius Fugh had 21 points and eight rebounds and Dominic Powell scored 12 points for GNTC. The Bobcats (11-15) and Lady Cats (0-16) will play Saturday in the GCAA Region 17 Division III tournament at Emory-Oxford College in Covington. Katy Phillips had 17 points, seven rebounds, five steals and five assists and Sprite Dyer and Haley Blevins grabbed 10 and nine rebounds in the Lady Cats' 60-42 loss Saturday at Southern Crescent Tech.

Baseball

* After being named Monday the USA South player and pitcher of the week, Covenant's Luke Harvey and Jonah Paul were announced Tuesday as members of the national D3baseball.com team of the week. The first listing of the year actually included stats for two weeks. Harvey is 12-for-22 (.545) with five multihit games, while Paul is 2-0 with a 0.64 earned run average and only six hits allowed in 14 innings pitched. The Scots are 5-1 after losing 6-5 Tuesday night at Oglethorpe. Harvey had two hits, two stolen bases and two RBIs and Julien Amorelli and Z Arima each had two hits also.

Football

* Record-blasting Tusculum College receiver Justin Houston from Bradley Central High School received honorable mention for the 2015 Don Hansen Football Gazette NCAA Division II All-America Team. The 5-foot-8, 170-pound senior received similar mention after the 2013 season, in which he set a school record with 110 catches. He had 106 as a senior, when he tied a Pioneers record with nine touchdown grabs. He has the school and South Atlantic Conference career record of 322 receptions and TC records also for 3,182 receiving yards, 4,622 all-purpose yards, 13 100-yard receiving games and 68 kickoff returns.
