The Tennessee Wesleyan men's basketball team won 98-84 Tuesday at nationally fourth-ranked Union College in Barbourville, Ky., and vaulted the other Bulldogs into first place in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. Union won the women's game 77-66. Trey Suttles had 22 points, 11 rebounds and five assists and Devante Jenkins had 21 points, 12 rebounds and four assists for the TWC men (11-1, 5-1), while Leland Robinson scored 15 points, Charles White had six assists with 13 points and Jordan Hall added 12 points with three 3-point baskets. Nick Riley led Union (13-4, 5-1) with 30 points. Jara Gasper, the reigning AAC women's player of the week, scored 26 points and Hunter Simpson and Sarah McKinnon had 12 apiece for TWC's Lady Bulldogs (5-5, 5-3), Simpson with 10 rebounds. Union pulled out of a halftime tie with a 21-9 third quarter.
* Covenant College won the men's game 76-71 but lost the women's contest 70-46 against visiting Piedmont in USA South basketball Tuesday on Lookout Mountain. T.J. Cox made 11 of 12 free throws and scored 17 points for the Scots (6-6, 1-1). Berto Dryden added 12 points, and Daniel Garrett had eight rebounds with nine points. Joanna Smith and Rachel Price led the Lady Scots with 13 and 11 points and 13 rebounds apiece. Both Covenant teams are among three or four candidates for USAS play of the month for December, and fan voting determines the winners (check usasouth.net).

* Longtime faculty athletic representative Dr. Michael Jones was the UTC selection for the Southern Conference's inaugural all-faculty team, announced Monday. Each of the league's 10 full members was represented. Jones is a professor of mechanical engineering who has worked for UTC for 40 years. He has chaired the UTC Athletics Board and been a subcommittee chair of the NCAA Institutional Self-Study Committee, and he has been a volunteer assistant with the school's running teams since 1988.
