Kamaal Shakur heads into his sophomore year as a University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestler as the fifth-place finisher in the 70-kilogram bracket of the University Freestyle National Championships this past weekend in Akron, Ohio. Shakur lost his opening match to Maaziah Bethea of Penn but then won eight in a row in the consolation bracket, capped by a 7-2 defeat of Bethea in the match for fifth. Bethea had lost in the championship semifinals to the weight-class champion. UTC's Scottie Boykin won two matches in the 97-kilogram main draw and one in the consolations, and Bryce Carr won his first three in the 86-kilogram main draw.

Softball

* Bryan College softball senior first baseman Lacye Walker, a former Grace Academy and Chattanooga State star, earned NAIA All-America honorable mention for 2016. She batted .445 with a .710 slugging percentage, six home runs, 38 RBIs and 34 runs scored for Bryan, which was 29-23 overall and 16-4 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. Walker was second in the NAIA with 23 doubles in 2016, and she made the All-AAC and all-defensive teams.

Golf

* Athens, Tenn., product Eric Axley of Knoxville was in a large group that missed U.S. Open qualifying by a stroke at 137 in the 36-hole sectional qualifier Monday at the Germantown and Ridgeway country clubs in Memphis. UTC's Lake Johnson and former Moc Derek Rende shot 144 and 145 (with a 69 and a 68 at Ridgeway). Former Dalton High School golfer Blake Adams from Eatonton, Ga., withdrew from the sectional qualifier at Roswell, Ga., after contending for a Web.com Tour win this past weekend in the Dominican Republic, and Lee's Shea Sylvester shot a 153 at Roswell. UTC's Etienne Brault shot a 157 on two courses in Ohio.

* Taylor Gardner of Signal Mountain won girls' 14-18 division of the Birmingham Junior Shootout on the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour this past Saturday and Sunday at Limestone Springs Golf Club. She shot an 80 each day and defeated runner-up Ellie Skeen of Canton, Ga., by 12 strokes.

Auto Racing

* Ray "Zoomie" Zumstein of Harrison took first place and $1,500 in the combined Pro and Foot Brake classes Saturday night at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip. They were combined because of rain showers, and Zumstein won with a 7.80-second run on a 7.79 dial in his 1965 Valiant. Matt Rakestraw of Calhoun, Ga., was second in his 383-cubic-inch Chevy-powered dragster with a 6.25 run on a 6.22 dial. Bryson Kaiser of LaFayette won the Junior Dragster class with an 8.98 run on an 8.95 dial, and Kaleb Winters of Soddy-Daisy and Khloe Wilson of Flintstone were second and third.
