Lady Flames edge West Florida 63-62 in GSC tournament

The fifth-seeded Lee University women's basketball team edged fourth seed West Florida 63-62 on Tuesday in Pensacola and will play top-seeded Union University in the semifinals of the Gulf South Conference tournament.

The semifinals and final will be held at the Pete Hanna Center in Birmingham, Ala. The Lee/Union game is set for 1 p.m. EST on Friday.

Erin Walsh scored 26 points for Lee's Lady Flames (20-9) against West Florida (17-10), which led 35-30 at halftime. Lee outscored the Argonauts 16-10 in the third quarter. West Florida shot only 28.6 percent from the field in the second half, when the visitors shot 42.3 percent.

Shelby Brrown scored 12 points and matched Lee teammate Carrie Cheeks with four blocked shots, and Jordan Neuharth came off the bench and provided seven assists. Toni Brewer and Courtney Meyer had 12 and 11 points and 12 rebounds apiece for West Florida.

Tigers edge Walters

The fifth-seeded Chattanooga State men's basketball team rallied to defeat fourth seed Walters State 79-77 in the TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII tournament Tuesday in Gallatin, Tenn., but sixth-seeded Cleveland State was eliminated with an 82-74 loss to Columbia State.

Brandon Shingles scored 27 points and Develyn Williams and DaV Moore added 14 and 11 for Chattanooga State's Tigers, who trailed 35-26 at halftime and 69-59 before coming back to win. They will play again Thursday at 3 p.m. EST.

Darrion Leslie had 22 points and 14 rebounds and Jahaad Lyons and Lawrence Castor scored 19 points in defeat for Cleveland State.

Lady Cougars win two

Seven-11 was a good combination for the Cleveland State softball team Monday.

The Lady Cougars won 18-1 and 10-1 against the University of the Cumberlands junior varsity, with a seven-run first inning and an 11-run fourth that became their last at-bat of the first game.

Madison Stiner and Mallory Souther batted in three runs apiece in the opener, when Rachel Goodson and Emily Banks each had two RBIs and Tori Townson scored three times. Kara Headrick pitched four innings for the win, allowing two hits and the one run.

Carly Frost was the winning pitcher in game two for Cleveland State (8-0), with three hits and no runs allowed in three innings. Cumberlands got its run in the top of the fifth.

Goodson had two more RBIs and Townson stole three bases and scored two runs.

The Lady Cougars host Volunteer State in a doubleheader Friday starting at 2 p.m.
