Both UTC golf teams are tied for sixth in their respective tournaments after Monday's rounds, the men at 579 in the 18-team Cleveland Golf Palmetto at Aiken, S.C., and the female Mocs at 606 in the 17-team UNF Collegiate in Jacksonville, Fla. South Carolina has a 14-shot men's lead at 18-under 242 over Virginia, which is 16 ahead of third-place Augusta. UTC's Wes Gosselin is tied for 16th individually at 143, three shots ahead of teammates Andrew Weathers and Brooks Thomas. At Jacksonville, UTC's Emily McLennan is tied for 13th at 149 and Megan Woods shares 17th at 150, with Monica San Juan at 153. Texas and Houston share the team lead at 590.

* The Dalton State women's golfers are in second place at 321, three strokes behind Coastal Georgia, after a tough first round Monday of the 11-team New Orleans Spring Invitational in Slidell, La. Dalton State's Carly Shane is tied for second at 79, six shots behind Coastal's Diane Lim, while Erika Wardzinski is tied for fourth at 80 and teammates Julia McQuilken and Katie Dalton share sixth at 81. The Lady Roadrunners lead third-place Loyola (La.) by 12.

* The Dalton State men followed a first-round 304 with a 295 at the Sand Shark Classic at Oldfield Golf Club in South Carolina and are in third place, three strokes behind Reinhardt and 20 behind Coastal Georgia. DSC's Chase Jones is tied for sixth at 146, and Levi Nix had a hole-in-one and is ninth at 147.

* Sewanee's Harry McMurrey is tied for 14th individually at 74 and Timothy Walter shot 78 Monday in the 17-team Calloway Gardens Intercollegiate men's golf tournament. The Tigers are 14th at 318; Huntingdon leads at 289.

Fishing

' Walker Valley High School graduate Caden Watson and Tennessee Tech teammate Matt Allen won the Carhartt Bassmaster College Classic exhibition bass tournament Sunday on Lake Hudson in Oklahoma. Their four keepers weighed 18 pounds, 1 ounce - almost four pounds more than the runner-up boat from Texas A&M. The Tech tandem bent the prop shaft of their outboard motor soon after beginning practice and wound up fishing two areas close to the boat ramp.

* Two current Walker Valley anglers, Blake Sims and Jacob Foutz, finished fourth in the Costa Bassmaster High School Classic exhibition on Grand Lake O' the Cherokees, and Grundy County's Cole Stewart and Josh Powers were ninth. Invited teams were the top two in each of the high school opens in the Southern, Central and Midwest regions and the high school nationals last August on Kentucky Lake.

Auto Racing

* The Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip opened its 2016 season Saturday night with 75 cars in three classes, and Craig Cash of East Ridge won the Super Pro runoffs and $1,500 in a 1985 Camaro IROC. His winning run was timed at 6.33 seconds on a 6.31 dial. Cash set the strip record of 4.21 seconds at 172.45 mph in June 2008 in a 540-cubic-inch Chevy-powered 1985 Ford Thunderbird. Hugh Harris of Ringgold was second in Super Pro with a 4.82-second run in his big-block Chevy-powered dragster. That was the low elapsed time of the night, at 139.80 mph. Micah Stewart was the Foot Brake winner with a 7.01 run on a 7.00 dial in a 2002 Camaro; Chad Brewer was second with a 6.52 on a 6:50 in a 1967 Camaro. Mattie Keener of Whitwell followed her 2015 strip championship with another Junior Dragster victory, with sister Chloe second. Mattie ran a 7.96 and Chloe a 7.99, both on 7.95 dials.

Baseball

* Ryan Gosney and Grant Sierpa pitched Covenant to a 4-1 home win over Hampden-Sydney in Division III baseball Monday. Z Arima and Caleb Bloye had two hits each and Luke Harvey scored twice for the Scots (9-8).

* The Chattanooga State baseball team is 11-4 with an official 2-1 TCCAA record after its weekend home series against Dyersburg State. The Tigers, who previously had won four of four nonleague games against league members, won 12-0 in five innings and lost 8-2 on Saturday and won 14-11 on Sunday.
