Around the Region: Flames runners win Division II region meet; Lady Flames third

With Christian Noble and Harold Smith finishing third and fifth and two teammates also in the top 11, the Lee University men's cross country team won the 17-team NCAA Division II South Region meet Saturday at Saint Leo, Fla., and the Lee women were third with Audrey Smith fourth and Amy Carpenter 10th in the 6-kilometer race. The Flames had 52 points to runner-up Saint Leo's 89 in the 10k, led by Noble's 31:49.9 and Harold Smith's 31:55.7. Seth Eagleson was 10th, Brandon Raleigh 11th and Tucker Hindle 28th. All the Lee men counted one place higher in the points standings than their finish, since the overall winner was lone Shorter representative Alfred Chelanga (31:23.3). Audrey Smith's 6k time was 22:30.68. The Lady Flames' Charlee Boxall, Blakely Moore and Savannah Ratcliff were 29th, 33rd and 45th.

* Tyler Boone of Bryan College was the men's individual winner and Tennessee Wesleyan was third in both races Saturday in the Appalachian Athletic Conference cross country meet at Montreat, Ala. Boone's 8k time was 25:57.1. TWU's Javier Garcia and Bailey Gannon were ninth and 12th. Chattanoogan Sarah Kate Gartman of second-place Milligan was sixth in the 5k with TWU's Leah Chance 10th, teammates Hannah Rhodes, Mysteree Botoroff and Karlie Yinger 15th through 17th and Bryan's Kenzie Freeman 19th.

Volleyball

* The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team lost 3-1 Saturday night in a Southern Conference match at Western Carolina and is 15-12 overall and 8-6 in the league going into its last two regular-season matches next weekend at home. The set scores at WCU (10-16, 5-8) were 13-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-18. Kristy Wieser and Eden Murray led the Mocs in kills with 11 and 10, while Dani Szczepanksi and Brianna Anderson added eight each and Madison Bergren and Lauren Greenspoon each had 20 assists. Rachel Petkosh had 18 digs and Bergren, Miranda Elpers and Anderson had 14, 13 and 12. For the Catamounts, Abigail Veit had 18 kills and Aleah Keaton had 15, and Jo-Leigh VerVelde had 42 assists and 15 digs.

* Dalton State ended its volleyball regular season Saturday with a 3-0 Southern States win (25-14, 25-21, 29-27) at Middle Georgia State. Anna Metzler had 11 kills, Clarissa Weber and Brooke Thomas set 16 and 12 assists and Olivia Keegan and Karly Newman each had 12 digs for the Roadrunners (10-17, 9-11).

* In an AAC tri-match postponed from Oct. 8, Bryan College won 3-0 (25-11, 25-22, 25-14) over host Allen and lost 3-1 (20-25, 25-12, 25-17, 25-16) to second-place Milligan, which got 42 assists from Cleveland High graduate Kellee Geren. For Bryan (18-18, 13-9) in that match, Hope Burnett had 10 kills and Mariah Dunlop and Paige Lawson had nine and eight, whle Veronica Salas and Jennifer Keck had 23 and 21 assists and Kayla Rymer had 23 digs. Against Allen, Lawson had 12 kills and Burnett and Rachel Mosley had nine and eight, while Salas had 17 assists and 13 digs, Rymer 17 digs and Keck 16 assists.

Swimming

* Jon Lancaster from Heritage High in Ringgold won the men's 100 backstroke and Gillian Cline from Franklin County won the women's 100 breaststroke as part of Carson-Newman's 328.5-72.5 swimming win Friday night against visiting King University. The Eagles won every event for the second straight meet and have won 70 of 72 this season.

Basketball

* UTC men's basketball coach Matt McCall will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without. McCall's Mocs begin their season with games Friday and next Sunday at Tennessee and North Carolina.
