Shana Miller scored 17 points and Mia Collins and Kaela Patrick added 16 apiece as the Chattanooga State women's basketball team began its season and Stacey Franklin's head-coaching career with a 78-72 road win Tuesday night against the Milligan College junior varsity. Mariah Bryant scored 10 points for the Lady Tigers.

* Despite 18 points, 12 rebounds and three steals by Hunter Simpson, the Tennessee Wesleyan women's basketball team lost 84-82 to visiting Brenau in overtime Tuesday. Madison Walkup scored 14 points with four 3-point baskets and Lindsey Macon had five assists for TWU (1-2).

* The NAIA Division II Bryan women's team lost 75-61 at NAIA D-I Martin Methodist (2-0), which got 19 ponts and five assists from Teairra Luckett. Amber Levi scored 16 points and Megan Billingsby had 14 with seven rebounds for Bryan (1-1), and Kaylee Smith scored 11 points. Bryan's men are 1-3 after a 75-71 home loss to Oakwood.

* Cleveland State's women are 2-1 after winning 56-48 Tuesday at Wallace State in Hanceville, Ala. The Cleveland State men won 74-62 and are 2-0.

* Katy Phillips scored 14 points for Georgia Northwestern in a 69-26 home loss Tuesday to four-year school Judson. The Lady Bobcats are 0-3 with only seven players available.

Auto Racing

* Doug Hughes of Decatur won the 4:70 class last Saturday at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip with a 4.72-second run in a 1968 Camaro, and Steve Smith of Spring City was second in a 1990 Corvette. The Catoosa County curfew for the strip left the Super Pro prize money split among four drivers - Jeremiah Powell of Trenton, Marvin Crutcher of Ooltewah, Kevin Pass of Dallas, Ga., and Mike Goza of Gaylesville, Ga. - and the Foot Brake money divided equally among Melvin Croft of Chattanooga, Ray Zumstein of Harrison and Frank Mooney of Flat Rock, Ala. Scott Lloyd of Clinton, Tenn., was the Junior Dragster winner with Sarah Williamson of Maryville second, and Michael Leonard of Sevierville was first with Bud Calhoun of Ringgold second in Motorcycle. Jerry Wilson of Flintstone had the meet's low elapsed time (4.63) and top speed (144.5 mph) in his new 598 Chevrolet dragster.

Volleyball

* Brooke Wilsman, Catherine Conley and Carly Callahan had 13 kills apiece as Lee University edged visiting Trevecca Nazarene 3-2 in nonconference volleyball Tuesday night. The set scores were 18-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-22, 15-9, and Kristi Farley and Sadie Johnson had 28 and 22 assists with 12 digs each while MaKayla Beebe and Wilsman had 23 and 22 digs for Lee (14-13). Katelyn Atkinson had 25 kills and 25 digs and freshman setter Hanna Matthews from Ooltewah had 53 assists for Trevecca (16-12).

* Ridgeland's Te'a Owens and Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe's Rachel Harwood took part in the invitation-only Georgia Volleyball Senior All-Stars match last Saturday. Owens was a first-team Class AAAA all-state selection, and Harwood was a Class AAA all-state repeater.

Soccer

* Sewanee's Elizabeth Eidson and Mary "Sissy" Frank were included in the 2016 Southern Athletic Association women's soccer first team, and Erin Gill was a second-team All-SAA selection. Samantha Bourgeois and Savannah Williams received honorable mention, as did Kyle Johnston and Alpo Sipilla in the men's All-SAA voting.

* Tennessee Wesleyan sophomore goalkeeper Nick Croucher was the Appalachian Athletic Conference men's soccer defensive player of the week for his work in the tournament-quarterfinal 1-0 shutout of Truett-McConnell. The Bulldogs will face Bryan in a semifinal at Barbourville, Ky., on Thursday, when Wesleyan will host a women's semifinal against TMC and Bryan's Lady Lions will play Union College.

Cross Country

* Lee University men's runners Christian Noble, Harold Smith, Seth Eagleson and Brandon Raleigh and the Lady Flames' Audrey Smith and Amy Carpenter officially were named all-region by the USTFCCCA for their finishes last Saturday in the NCAA Division II South cross country meet at Saint Leo, Fla. Lee won the men's event and was third in the women's race.
