Baseball

* High school pitchers Logan Workman from Soddy-Daisy and Seth Wicker from Signal Mountain were among the four fall signees announced late last week for the Lee University baseball team. The others were shortstop/pitcher Thomas Sazzaro from Hendersonville, Tenn., and Station Camp High and outfielder Cameron Coffey from Williston, Fla., and South Georgia College. Coffey was first-team All-GCAA last spring, when he batted .445 with 22 extra-base hits, 58 runs scored and 19 stolen bases in 21 attempts, and Sazzaro is a two-time all-state selection and the Nashville Old Timers Baseball Association player of the year. "They are all A-plus individuals off the field and have the opportunity to make major contributions early on the field," Lee coach Mark Brew said in a school release. Workman, a 6-foot-3 right-hander, was 3-0 with 20 strikeouts in 17 innings for the Trojans last spring, when he mostly played catcher out of necessity, and Lee's chief recruiter, Justin Dedman, said he "is the proverbial 'diamond in the rough.' He has a live fastball with a good breaking ball, a big, broad frame and few innings in his arm." Wicker, a 6-2 lefty, was 4-2 with a 2.01 ERA, an opponents' batting average of .199 and 59 strikeouts in 38 innings for the 2016 Eagles. "We have had our eye on Seth for a couple of years," Dedman said. "Seth is a big, strong left-handed pitcher with a good breaking ball and low mileage on his arm. His fastball gets on hitters quickly, and he has good control of his body for his size and age."

Swimming

* Beginning with a victory in the first event, the 200-yard women's freestyle relay, the Sewanee swimming and diving teams earned 12 wins in their Igloo Invitational meet Friday and Saturday against six other schools. Caty Hueske, Bonnie Wakefield, Meghan Mulhern and Kaylee Pierson won that initial relay, and then Mulhern won the 500 free with Hueske second. Later Friday, those two joined Mary McCarthy and Emily Gay in winning the 800 free relay, Brooke Kasoff won the 200 butterfly and Sewanee divers Noel Whitlock and Winston Westbrook swept the 1- and 3-meter events with teammates Jessi Zahn and Jed Henrichsen the runners-up in both. Hueske also was second in the 100 free, Pierson was second in the 100 breaststroke, McCarthy was second in the 200 backstroke, and they and Mulhern were second in the 400 medley relay. Saturday, Hueske won the 100 back, Mulhern won the 200 free, Pierson won the 200 breast, those three and Wakefield were second in the 400 free relay, Ashley Krueger was second in the women's 1650 free and Michael Whitehead was second in the men's 400 individual medley.

* Jon Lancaster from Heritage High School in Ringgold, Ga., set a Carson-Newman record for the men's 100 individual medley with a first-place time of 52.05 seconds Saturday at the Bearcats Midseason Invitational swim meet at the University of Cincinnati. He won the 200 IM on Friday in 1:51.59, and CNU's Gillian Cline from Franklin County was third in the women's 100 IM.

Basketball

* Bella Taylor scored a game-high 20 points as Sewanee's women beat Wesleyan 78-50 Sunday in Macon, Ga. Taylor also had four assists, four rebounds and two steals for the Tigers, who earned their first win in the third game of the season. Corey Caulder, Allison Hitchcok and Sue Kim each added 11 points and Hannah McCormack had 10 for Sewanee, which trailed 12-11 after the first quarter but led 32-22 at halftime and 56-34 entering the final period. Hitchcock grabbed 14 rebounds and McCormack had eight, while Kim had four steals.
