Previous Alabama-Florida SEC title-game matchups

ALABAMA 28, FLORIDA 21 (1992) - The Southeastern Conference became the first Division I-A league to stage a championship game between its two division winners, and it delivered a thrilling debut at Birmingham's Legion Field. Florida quarterback Shane Matthews threw for 287 yards and two touchdowns, but he also was intercepted twice. With 3:16 remaining in a 21-21 tie, Crimson Tide cornerback Antonio Langham snagged a Matthews pass and raced 27 yards for the deciding score. Alabama improved to 12-0 and went on to upset No. 1 Miami 34-13 in the Sugar Bowl, giving the SEC its first consensus national champion since Georgia in 1980.

FLORIDA 28, ALABAMA 13 (1993) - Terry Dean threw for 256 yards and two touchdowns and the Gators pulled away after leading 14-13 late in the third quarter. Cold and rainy weather accompanied the second SEC title game, and the paid attendance at Legion Field was just 76,345 in a facility that held 83,091. This was the final league championship game in Birmingham, and it's among the more forgettable in the event's history. Alabama and Florida entered Birmingham having each lost to Auburn, which went 11-0 and was the league's highest-ranked team in the Associated Press poll but was ineligible due to NCAA sanctions.

FLORIDA 24, ALABAMA 23 (1994) - The third SEC title game was the first inside the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Alabama took a 23-17 lead with 8:56 remaining in the game on Dwayne Rudd's 23-yard interception return for a touchdown, but Gators quarterback Danny Wuerffel rebounded from that miscue to engineer a 10-play, 80-yard drive that ended with a 2-yard touchdown pass to Chris Doering. Wuerffel threw for 227 yards and two touchdowns, but the MVP was Gators defensive lineman Ellis Johnson, who racked up three tackles for loss, including two sacks. Alabama entered 11-0 but was ranked behind Nebraska and Penn State.

FLORIDA 45, ALABAMA 30 (1996) - In Wuerffel's final game against an SEC opponent, the soon-to-be Heisman Trophy winner hung a whopping 401 passing yards and six aerial touchdowns on a Crimson Tide defense that entered the game ranked sixth nationally. Wuerffel's favorite target was Reidel Anthony, who set SEC title-game records with 11 catches for 171 yards and three scores. Alabama took a 7-0 lead on a 36-yard pass from Freddie Kitchens to Dennis Riddle, but the Gators scored the next 24 points. Florida was thought to be out of the national title picture after losing its regular-season finale 24-21 at Florida State, but upsets elsewhere enabled the Gators to get a rematch in the Sugar Bowl, where they crushed the Seminoles 52-20.

ALABAMA 34, FLORIDA 7 (1999) - The four-year turbulence that was the Mike DuBose era at Alabama did have this high-water mark. The Gators struck for a 7-0 lead just 100 seconds into the game on a 3-yard touchdown pass from tailback Earnest Graham to tight end Erron Kinney, but the Crimson Tide defense held Florida to 59 yards the rest of the game. Alabama held a 15-7 advantage entering the fourth quarter and then blew it open, with receiver Freddie Milons racing 77 yards for the sealing touchdown with 11:54 remaining. Alabama would begin the 2000 season ranked No. 3, but the Crimson Tide bottomed out at 3-8, and DuBose was out in Tuscaloosa.

FLORIDA 31, ALABAMA 20 (2008) - This was the best SEC title game ever played until Alabama's 32-28 escape of Georgia in 2012 topped it. The 2008 pairing was historic in that Alabama entered ranked No. 1 and Florida No. 2, which marked the first time the SEC had staged a 1-vs.-2 showdown. Alabama dominated the third quarter, with tailback Mark Ingram capping a 15-play, 91-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run and with Leigh Tiffin's 27-yard field goal putting the Tide up 20-17 entering the fourth. The final 15 minutes were all Gators, as a 1-yard Jeff Demps run with 9:21 left put Florida ahead to stay and a 5-yard scoring pass from Tim Tebow to Riley Cooper with 2:50 remaining sealed it. Florida would go on to top Oklahoma in the BCS title game for its second national championship in three years.

ALABAMA 32, FLORIDA 13 (2009) - A second straight Alabama-Florida title game had a second straight 1-2 angle, though the Gators entered this time at No. 1. This was the final SEC game for Tebow, but he was overshadowed from the start by Crimson Tide counterpart Greg McElroy, who went 12-of-18 passing for 239 yards and a touchdown and had a memorable tightrope scramble down the sideline for a first down. Alabama racked up a stunning 490 yards against a Florida defense that had held opponents to less than 230 a contest. The Crimson Tide won their first national championship since 1992 by defeating Texas in the BCS title game, and the 2009 SEC title contest is the only one that pitted two undefeated teams.

ALABAMA 29, FLORIDA 15 (2015) - Crimson Tide tailback Derrick Henry added to his Heisman Trophy resume by rushing for 189 yards and a touchdown on 44 carries. The Gators took a 7-2 lead early in the second quarter on Antonio Callaway's 85-yard punt return for a touchdown, but that would be their one bright moment in a contest in which they finished with seven first downs and 180 total yards. Alabama freshman receiver Calvin Ridley had eight catches for 102 yards to complement Henry's running, and the Crimson Tide would go on to smoke Michigan State in the Cotton Bowl and outlast Clemson in the national championship game for their fourth national crown in seven seasons.
