Around the Region: UTC soccer team earns third straight win

Hannah Torbett scored a golden goal to lead the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga to a 2-1 overtime victory against Mercer in Southern Conference soccer Sunday at Finley Stadium. It's the third straight win for the Mocs (5-7-1, 3-1), who are off to their best start in SoCon play since 2004. "I'm delighted for the girls," coach Gavin McKinney said in a UTC release. "We had a rough start with out-of-conference play. We dropped a lot of games by a goal, but we kept preaching to them that it's got to be about the SoCon play for us." Ellie Myrick staked UTC to a 1-0 lead a little more than two minutes after kickoff, converting a cross from Peyton McCollum, but Logan Culver scored in the 40th minute for Mercer (3-8-1, 1-3) and the match remained tied until the 92nd minute. Torbett, a freshman midfielder, notched her second goal of the season - the other came in Friday's 1-0 win against The Citadel - when she headed in McKenzie Gregg's free kick that was set up by a foul a little more than a minute into overtime. Mercer finished with a 13-8 advantage on shots, but Melia Correa made eight saves to help keep the Mocs' winning streak intact.
