The Chattanooga Lookouts' Zach Granite and Stephen Gonsalves were honored as the Minnesota Twins' minor league player and pitcher of the year for 2016. Granite's honor officially is the Sherry Robertson Award, named for the Twins' first farm director, and Lookouts manager Doug Mientkiewicz won it in 1998, one year after David Ortiz. Granite, a 24-year-old outfielder, spent the entire season with Chattanooga and batted .295 with 30 extra-base hits, 56 stolen bases, 86 runs scored and 52 batted in. He was No. 1 in steals in minor league baseball. Jim Rantz Award winner Gonsalves, 22, was 5-4 with a 2.33 earned run average and 66 strikeouts in 65 2/3 innings at Class A Fort Myers (Fla.) but really blossomed after moving up to Class AA in early June. He went 8-1 with a 1.82 ERA and 89 strikeouts in 74 1/3 innings with Chattanooga. The Lookouts' 2017 season will begin April 6 with a five-game home series against Mobile.
