Around the Region: Ned Caswell selected for Southern Tennis Hall of Fame

Manker Patten general manager and Baylor School director of tennis Ned Caswell is one of three selections for the 2017 induction class of the Southern Tennis Hall of Fame. The others are Pat Devoto of Decatur, Ga., and Jeff Gray of Mobile, Ala. Their ceremony is set for Jan. 21 in Atlanta. Caswell, 52, was a two-time All-American and the Southern Conference most valuable player at Furman, and he reached the NCAA singles quarterfinals in 1987. He was on a USTA Junior Davis Cup team with Jim Courier, Pete Sampras, Malivai Washington, Jeff Tarango and David Wheaton, and his professional touring career included wins over Sampras, Patrick McEnroe and Tim Wilkison. Before coming to Chattanooga and Manker Patten 20 years ago, he was a two-time national coach of the year for Anderson College. Continuing to play in USTA age-group divisions, he has won 16 national titles and was ranked No. 1 in the world in men's 35s singles and doubles in 1999-2000 and was a world champion in singles in 1999 and in doubles that year and 2001.

- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga sophomore McKenzie Barco defeated Austin Peay's Ana Albertson 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-3 in the B singles flight of the ITA Ohio Valley Regional women's tournament Thursday at Murfreesboro. Barco, coming back from offseason surgery, had to retire from her second match, while UTC's Sydney Patton lost 7-6 (3), 7-6 (10) to a UT-Martin player. The Mocs' Delaney Edwards and Caroline Hall will play today in the singles main draw, and Edwards will play with Patton in doubles.

- In the men's ITA Ohio Valley Regional at Knoxville, UTC got first-day doubles wins from Nic Wilson and Simon Bustamante (8-5 over an Eastern Kentucky duo) and Michael Birnbaum and Max Grobbelaar (8-7 over an Austin Peay pair). The Mocs lost six singles matches.

- The funeral arrangements for former UTC and Florida basketball coach and UTC tennis coach and Manker Patten manager Tommy Bartlett were posted Thursday by Chattanooga Funeral Home North. Bartlett, a member of 11 sports halls of fame who died Wednesday at age 88, will be buried Monday at the National Cemetery following a noon service at First Baptist Church of Chattanooga. The family will receive friends there beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Soccer

- Three Chattanooga Football Club players were named to the Women's Professional Soccer League all-star team for 2016: defenders Ashley Harber and Kailey Bryan and midfielder Carlie Banks. Banks is from Peachtree City, Ga., and played for LSU and professionally in Finland, while Bryan is from Snellville, Ga., and Delta State University. Harber is from New Orleans and Belhaven University.

- Two undefeated NAIA men's soccer teams met Thursday night at Campbellsville and left undefeated, as Bryan's 11th-ranked Lions tied the No. 7 host Tigers 0-0 through two overtime periods. Bryan is 12-0-3, Campbellsville 10-0-2. The shots count barely favored the Tigers, 15-11, but Bryan had a 2-1 edge in shots on goal.

- The Covenant College women's team is No. 10 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III South Atlantic rankings this week, giving the Lady Scots (13-2, 11-1) their first spot in a region poll since the Lookout Mountain school moved to D-III. They are the only USA South team listed.

Basketball

- Covenant was picked to finish third in the USA South men's basketball standings in the 2016-17 season, after winning the 2016 league tournament. LaGrange, which has been to the NCAA Division III tournament the last three years, got four of the 11 first-place votes and 90 points in the coaches' balloting, while Piedmont was second with 77. Covenant, with a new coach in Arte Culver, got three firsts and 70 points, and Maryville was fourth with 69. The new season begins Nov. 15. Covenant was picked fourth in the women's USAS West.
