Around the Region: Mark Guhne's Mocs begin 2016-17 golf season in New York

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team opens 2016-17 play today in the Turning Stone-Tiger Intercollegiate tournament in Verona, N.Y. Reigning Tennessee Amateur champion Wes Gosselin led the Mocs' in-team qualifying with a minus-13 over four area courses, and Andrew Weathers, Brooks Thomas, Lake Johnson and junior college All-American Phillip Hickam will join him in the Mocs' lineup with Canadian Etienne Brault playing as an individual. "We're definitely ready. I know I am," coach Mark Guhne said in a UTC release. "The guys worked extremely hard to get here."

* The City Prep golf tournament will be held Wednesday at The Bear Trace at Harrison Bay. Forty-nine boys and 26 girls from Chattanooga-area high schools will compete for individual titles, and team championships will be awarded, too. Baylor swept all four crowns last year. "We wanted to have something to try to showcase the best players in the Chattanooga area," said Notre Dame's Jeff Fisher, this year's tournament director and a 25-year coaching veteran who noted that the competition was around before his coaching career began. "That's what we've tried to do. We attempted at one time to bring in players from outside the area, but always the spirit of the thing was to show off the best players in the Chattanooga area." The boys will tee off first. The first threesome is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. The last boys' group is set to begin at 11:25. The first girls' threesome is slated to tee off at 11:34 and the last at 12:46 p.m.
