Volleyball Mocs win and lose in Dayton, Ohio tournament

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team bounced back from its first loss of the season, Friday against Northwestern, with a 3-1 win over Xavier in the Dayton (Ohio) Invitational on Saturday. Then the Mocs lost 3-0 to Dayton, which is 7-0.

Miranda Elpers and Kristy Wieser had 12 kills apiece and Allie Davenport and Dani Szczepanski added 11 each for UTC in the tight contest (22-25, 25-23, 28-26, 25-22) against Xavier, while setter Lauren Greenspoon had 46 assists and Rachel Petkosh made 21 digs. Davenport had 13 digs and four aces while Szczepanski had two block solos and five block assists in that win, and Elpers had 11 digs.

Davenport had 18 kills and 10 digs in the 25-23, 25-22, 25-20 loss to the Flyers, when Brianna Anderson and Elpers added seven kills each and Greenspoon had 33 assists. The Mocs (5-2) play next weekend in Creighton's tournament in Omaha, Neb.

- At Barbourville, Ky., Bryan College split its Southeastern Challenge matches for the second day in a row and is 5-4 for the season. On Saturday the Lady Lions lost 3-0 (26-24, 25-9, 25-20) to St. Thomas and won 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 25-17) over a Mobile team that received votes in the NAIA preseason poll. Hannah Smith had 20 kills in the win, when Shelby Enochs had 43 assists and 11 digs and Kayla Rymer and Kristen Parrish had 23 and 17 digs. Rachel Mosley added seven kills, and she, Enochs and Hope Burnett each was credited with six block assists.

- At Sewanee, Tenn., the host team in the Sewanee Invitational completed a 4-0 run by beating Pensacola Christian 3-0 (25-10, 25-11, 25-17) and defeating Middle Georgia State 3-1 (25-12, 25-23, 20-25, 25-22) on Saturday. The Tigers' Diamond Stewart had eight and 19 kills in the two matches, and senior classmate Sara Jayne Sutton totaled 34 digs while freshman setter Anna Wilson had 36 assists. Mason Gardella and Rebecca Rowan had 11 and 10 kills in the finale, when Constance Connolly added 18 assists to Wilson's 23 and Stewart made 13 digs.

- At Mount Berry, Ga., Covenant lost 3-2 to Washington & Lee and 3-0 to the host team in the Berry Invitational. Schuyler Moore had 15 kills and 15 digs and Hannah Harris had 10 kills and 11 digs in the 20-25, 25-16, 25-15, 22-25, 15-13 loss to W&L, and Moore and Mariah Corney had 11 and nine kills and 12 digs each in the 25-22, 25-16, 25-22 loss to Berry, when Morgan Opgenorth added 11 digs.
