Around the Region: UTC men's golf team tied for 5th as season starts

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team is tied for fifth after the first two rounds of the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate tournament, which started Sunday in Verona, N.Y. The Mocs shot a 9-over-par 297 in their first round of the 2016-17 schedule, then followed with a 305 for a 36-hole total of 602. Texas A&M leads the 14-team field at 10-under 566 and has a seven-stroke edge on Missouri entering today's final round. UTC's Andrew Weathers is tied for eighth after back-to-back par rounds, while teammate Wes Gosselin shares 20th at 4-over 148. Texas A&M's Kavan Eubank and Chandler Phillips are tied for first at 6-under 138 and have a four-stroke lead.

Soccer

- UTC's women team played to a scoreless tie in double overtime Sunday at Morehead State in Kentucky. The Mocs (1-3-1) outshot their hosts 17-14, including 5-3 on goal. UTC freshman Melia Correa recorded three saves in her first college shutout.

- Lee University's women's team lost 1-0 to Bellarmine on Sunday in Columbus, Ga., and is 0-1-1.

- Kyle Johnston and Reid Turner each scored twice as the Sewanee men beat Louisiana College 8-0 Sunday in Birmingham, Ala., while the Sewanee women lost 4-0 at Lynchburg in Virginia. In the men's match, Parker Fay, Noah McIndoo, Will Thomas and Ben Vaeth also scored, with one assist each for Turner, Darien Clay, Max Hawes, Larry Matt, Johnny McNeil, Marco Randazzo and Ramsey Seagle. Will Merriman played the bulk of the match in goal for the Tigers (2-0) and made one save. The Sewanee women, outshot 22-5 Sunday, dropped to 2-1.

- The first-year Dalton State College women's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw Saturday at Freed-Hardeman in Henderson, Tenn., where the DSC men then won 3-1 with two goals by freshman Santiago Moore. Senior Rury Alvarez also scored and Grant Dupertuis and Daniel Valenciano had assists for the Roadrunners (2-0). Juliana Gomez and Asmara Holmes scored for the women (3-1-1), and Rosie Lindo had an assist

- Jessica Young and Nicole Broderick each scored in the first 11 minutes and in the last 10 as Tennessee Wesleyan won 4-0 Saturday against visiting Thomas University. Dayna Randall and Broderick double-assisted Young's first goal 7:45 into the match, and Randall and Hannah Dearing assisted on the late goals for the Lady Bulldogs (1-2).

Cross Country

- Dalton State swept non-NCAA Division I competition at the University of Georgia's meet Saturday in Athens. The DSC women had six runners in the top 11 of the 5-kilometer race. Sophomore All-American Emily Poole was the individual winner in 18 minutes, 56.9 seconds, with senior Natalie Hensley third in 19:44.6 and Mallory Edwards, Gloria Pasquale and Ana Karen Padilla eighth through 10th with counting scores. Junior Nayeli Jacobo returned from an ACL injury suffered before last season and finished 11th. The Roadrunners nipped Morehouse 32-33 for the men's 8k victory, led by freshman Ryan Gebelein in 13th overall (and second on qualifying teams), Cole Thornton in 18th and Devin Swafford in 23rd. DSC's Spencer Head was leading through three miles but strained a hamstring and withdrew.

Field Hockey

- Sewanee lost 4-2 at Wittenberg on Sunday in Springfield, Ohio, with the Tigers (1-1) getting goals from Monica Bueso and Sarah Barry, with Ceara Caffrey assisting the second score.

Volleyball

- Dalton State went 1-3 in the Keiser University Invitational this past weekend in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., beating Johnson & Wales 3-0 (25-11, 25-4, 25-11) and losing 3-1 to Keiser (24-26, 25-16, 25-18, 25-16) on Saturday. Anna Andrade had 19 kills and 11 digs and Ryan Burke and Cassandra Cox added nine and seven kills against Keiser (9-0), while Brooke Thomas and Clarissa Weber had 20 and 18 assists.
