Led by a final-round 3-under-par 69 from Brooks Thomas, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team finished fourth out of 14 teams Monday in the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate tournament at Verona, N.Y. The Mocs' 286 was second to champion Missouri's 279 in the final round, and they wound up at 888 - behind the Tigers' 852, Texas A&M's 859 and Toledo's 875. UTC's Andrew Weathers tied for sixth individually at 215 with a closing 71, and Wes Gosselin, Lake Johnson, Etienne Brault (playing as an individual), Thomas and Phillip Hickam wound up at 225, 226, 227, 229 and 230. "Really happy with the last round and the way we finished," coach Mark Guhne said in a UTC release. "All six guys proved to me they can compete at this level and contribute to the team."

Auto Racing

* The Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip ran races both Saturday and Sunday of the holiday weekend, and Hugh Harris from Ringgold and Wyatt Miles from Flintstone were the $2,000 winners in the Super Pro class. Cynthia Warnock of Chattanooga had the low elapsed time and top speed each night, 4.64 seconds and 148.95 mph, in her 632-cubic-inch Chevrolet dragster built by her father, Ronnie Warnock. Miles was second on his 21st birthday to Harris and topped Cody Haygood of Dutton, Ala., in Sunday's final with a 5.94-second burst on a 5.93 dial in his big-block Chevy dragster. Haygood had a 5.04 on a 5.03. Harris defeated 45 competitors Saturday with a 4.85-second run on a 4.85 dial in his big-block Chevy dragster prepared by Steven Farrow, while Miles had a 5.93 on a 5.94 and Warnock was third. Chattanooga's Melvin Croft won the Foot Brake class Saturday in a 1995 Dodge Charger (8.72/8.72) with Eric Carpenter of Talbott, Tenn., second in a 1986 Chevy Nova (6.63/6.59), and Kevin Cash of Mentone, Ala., was the Foot Brake victor Sunday in a 1973 Dodge (6.48/6.48) with Randall Bolden of Morristown, Tenn., second in a 1967 Camaro SS (6.25/6.25). Macey Ludolph of Snellville, Ga., won the Junior Dragster class Saturday with Jackson Earwood of Cleveland, Ga., second, and Earwood was the Sunday winner with Griffin Haygood of Dutton, Ala., the runner-up.

Soccer

* Tennessee Wesleyan's NAIA men's soccer team edged visiting Carson-Newman from NCAA Division II on Monday, 2-1, as David Baisden and Jordan Jacob scored at 53:08 and 58:36 from assists by Jonny Le Quesne and OT Bah. The Eagles' Marius Staalby scored at 66:15. TWU is 2-0-1. The Wesleyan women got to 2-2 with a 1-0 home win over Indiana Tech. The score came 31:25 into the match.

* Freshman Daniel Valenciano scored two tiebreaking goals in the second half as Dalton State defeated visiting Montreat 3-2 in NAIA men's soccer Monday. Freshman Santiago Moore had two assists, including on sophomore Dean Foster's first-half goal, for the Roadrunners (3-0).

* The Sewanee men's soccer team improved to 3-0 with a 4-2 win over Franklin at Birmingham, as Max Hawes and Alpo Sipill scored in the first 14 minutes and the Tigers made it 4-0 on second-half goals by Ramsey Seagle and Tristan Carlson. Seagle assisted on Sipill's goal and netted a cross from Kyle Johnston. Sewanee had a 19-8 shots margin.

Running

* Covenant College sophomore Lilly Smith was honored as the USA South women's cross country runner of the week for her personal-best and second-place time of 13:33.52 for two miles in Covenant's Mountaintop Invitational meet last Friday.

Football

* Nannie Lee Fulmer, the mother of former Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer, died Sunday at age 91 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Jim Cortner, funeral director at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home in Winchester, Tenn., confirmed Monday that she died at NHC Healthcare in nearby Tullahoma. Coach Fulmer had a 152-52-1 record heading the program at his alma mater and directed the Volunteers to the 1998 national title.
