Around the Region: Baylor's Freeman chosen for national junior swimming team

Baylor School and Baylor Swim Club swimmer Trey Freeman has been chosen for the USA Swimming 2016-17 national junior team. It includes 65 18-under boys and girls, and Freeman follows previous Baylor athletes Arden Pitman, Spencer Rowe, Kristen Vredeveld and Sam McHugh in making the national team. Freeman had national top-five times in the 200- and 400-meter freestyle events and earned a silver medal in the 400 free for the USA Junior Pan Pacs team in late August. "This is a great honor for Trey," Dan Flack, the school's and the club's director of competitive swimming, said in a Baylor release. "Trey was very focused on this opportunity this entire season. Trey put in the work and did it. A huge off-shoot of this was his work raised the work ethic of the entire group."

Tennis

- Second-seeded Wes Cash of Chattanooga and Mark Vines of Naples, Fla., won 6-2, 6-2 over Peter Markes of Austin, Texas, and Paul Moss of New York City in the doubles quarterfinals of the USTA Men's 55 national grass court tournament Thursday in Pontiac, Mich. Cash, a Manker Patten teaching pro, has 17 national titles, seven of them with Vines. They face Ohio residents Michael Jones and Richard Jordan in the semifinals today.

Golf

- Maggie Scott of Charleston finished second at 233 and Darlene Werhnyak of Rossville, Ga., was third at 235 in the three-day Tennessee Women's Senior Amateur golf tournament that ended Wednesday at Windyke Country Club's East Course in Memphis. Lynda Wimberly of Brentwood won with a 228. Scott got the Super-Senior Award in the championship flight, and Winchester's Carol Smedley received the Super-Senior honor for the third flight with her runner-up 297.

- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golf team played at the first of the week in Knoxville and starts another tournament today at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn. The 54-hole Mason Rudolph Championship includes defending champion Alabama, Auburn, Baylor, Central Florida, Houston, Michigan State, Middle Tennessee, Northwestern, SMU, Tulane, Troy, Virginia and Yale in addition to the Mocs and Vanderbilt.

- Bryan College golfers Nick Scully and Tom Durbin made the all-tournament team at Truett-McConnell's Georgia Mountain Invitational early this week at Innsbruck Country Club in Helen. Scully was the runner-up with a 36-hole 148, and Durbin tied for sixth at 152. Lucas Coffelt shared 18th place at 162 as the Lions finished third in the five-team event. Lady Lions junior Christina Lee was 22nd with an 181 in the women's tournament at Innsbruck.

Boxing

- Chattanooga super welterweight DeMarcus Rogers is fighting Saturday in Nashville in the State Fair Boxing Showdown. Rogers is in the co-main event on the State Fair Sports Arena card, which begins with amateur fights at 4 p.m. CDT, and his Grind Nation Promotions is co-promoting the Showdown with Tri-Star Boxing. The professional fights are scheduled to start at 6:30. Tickets cost $20.

General

- The Lee University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is pairing with Buffalo Wild Wings of Cleveland in a Make-A-Wish Foundation promotion the next two Saturdays. The SAAC works with the foundation to help raise money and awareness for children with life-threatening illnesses, and Lee's athletes have set a $10,000 goal for this school year. Saturday and Sept. 24, 10 percent of all food and drink orders at the restaurant on Paul Huff Parkway will go to the foundation, with an LUSAAC ticket shown either via email or printed off, according to committee vice president and Flames baseball player Zack Zyburt.

Soccer

- The Dalton State men's soccer team won 6-0 over Life's first-year program Thursday night in Dalton and is 4-0-1. Sebastian Guzman and Daniel Valenciano each scored a goal in each half and Santiago Moore had a goal and four assists for the Roadrunners. Rury Alvarez netted the final goal.

Volleyball

- Dalton State pulled out a 3-2 Southern States Athletic Conference volleyball win over visiting Bethel on Thursday and now is 3-5, 2-1 in league play. The set scores were 25-17, 23-25, 27-25, 11-25, 20-18.

Baseball

- The Chattanooga Cyclones baseball team went 3-1 at the 64-team Perfect Game Southeastern Qualifier No. 1 last weekend, losing 2-1 to the nationally 17th-ranked East Cobb team. Four Cyclones made the all-tournament team: Harbor Jefferson as a pitcher and Cade Evans, Josh Gibson and Hudson Chastain after batting .546, 500 and .400, respectively.
