Around the Region: Chattanooga's Wesley Cash to play in eighth USTA national final

Wesley Cash of Chattanooga and Mark Vines of Naples, Fla., will be playing for their eighth USTA national championship together - and Cash's 18th - today in Pontiac, Mich., in the Men's 55 grass court doubles final, but the No. 2 seeds will be facing the top-seeded duo of Ross Hessler and Jon Tyrell. The Californians defeated the fourth seeds in three sets Friday, when Cash and Vines beat No. 5 seeds Michael Jones and Richard Jordan of Ohio, 6-4, 6-0.

Golf

* The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golf team is seventh out of 15 teams in the Mason Rudolph Championship after shooting a collective 292 Friday on the Vanderbilt Legends Club North Course in Franklin, Tenn., and the Mocs' Megan Woods is tied for fourth individually with a 2-under-par 70. Freshman teammate Holly Morgan is in an eighth-place tie at 71. Northwestern and defending champion Alabama share the team lead with 284s, with SMU third at 288, Auburn at 289 and Central Florida and Troy tied for fifth at 291. Middle Tennessee is 14th at 309. UTC's Maddy McDaniel carded a 73 playing as an individual, and Maria Pineiro and Cristina Perez shot 75 and 76.

Volleyball

* The UTC volleyball team rallied to edge Appalachian State 3-2 as the Scenic City Showdown presented by Hampton Inn & Suites got underway Friday night at Maclellan Gymnasium. The set scores were 20-25, 22-25, 25-16, 25-19, 15-8. Kristy Wieser had 17 kills and Allie Davenport and Miranda Elpers added 13 and 12 with 11 and 15 digs for UTC (6-5), while Madison Bergren and Lauren Greenspoon had 28 and 27 assists and Rachel Petkosh had 27 digs. Bailey Clemons also had double-digit digs, 13, and Emily Plumlee had nine kills and five block assists. Emma Longley had 19 kills and Ashlyn Brown had 48 assists for ASU (2-9).

* Visiting Alabama-Huntsville beat Lee University 3-1 (32-30, 25-17, 20-25, 25-19) in Gulf South Conference volleyball Friday, but Silvia Sartori had 23 kills and 13 digs in defeat. Sadie Johnson and Kristi Farley had 30 and 25 assists and MaKayla Beebe had 21 digs for Lee (3-3, 0-1), while Catherine Conley added 11 kills and Brooke Wilsman had eight kills and 11 digs. Anna Claire Johnson had 13 kills and Kirsten Giles had 37 assists, nine kills and 13 digs for UAH (7-1, 2-0).

* Covenant College downed Transylvania 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-15, 25-15) in the Emory Invitational volleyball tournament in Atlanta. That lifted the Lady Scots to 3-5.

* Freshman Rebekah Hill from Central High School was one of five King volleyball players with double-digit digs in a 3-2 (21-25, 25-16, 25-23, 23-25, 15-12) home win Friday against Limestone. Hill had 17. The team is 2-6, 2-0 in Conference Carolinas.

Soccer

* Eastern Kentucky edged visiting UTC 1-0 in women's soccer Friday. Jordan Foster scored on a rebound of her own shot for the Colonels (5-2) in the seventh minute, and that held up for their fifth win in a row. EKU had a slight edge in shots (13-10) and shots on goal (5-4), and freshman keeper Melia Correa had four saves for the Mocs (2-5-1).

* Drew Jackson and David Perez scored in the first 11 minutes and added an assist apiece as Lee University whipped Auburn-Montgomery 6-0 in men's soccer Friday in Cleveland. Rob Cutchin, Arturo Rocha, Jose Orellana and Jake Molony scored in the second half for the Flames (3-3), who had only a 19-16 edge in shots.

* Covenant had mixed results in two USA South home soccer games Friday, the men falling 3-2 to Averett before the Lady Scots won 2-1 over Piedmont. Carl Simakoff and Josh Brower scored tying goals for the Scots (0-4-1, 0-1) from assists by Josiah McDaniel and Jesse Riggs, but Averett (1-6, 1-0) went back ahead in the 85th minute on Ville Hautakangas' score from Oscar Lara's second assist. For the Covenant women (3-1, 1-0), Lizzy Hightower scored in the 31st and 85th minutes from assists by Savanna Cingilli and Anna Porch, and Rachel Lemay made five saves.
