Around the Region: UTC women's golf team shares fifth place

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golf team tied for fifth Sunday with a 54-hole score of 879 in the Mason Rudolph Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn. Alabama repeated its 2015 team championship with an 825, and SMU (868), Northwestern (871) and Central Florida (876) followed. The Mocs, who shared fifth with Auburn, were led by Cristina Perez as she tied for 15th at 2-over-par 218 - 16 shots behind first-place Cheyenne Knight of Alabama - after closing with a par 72. Teammate Holly Morgan shared 18th place at 219, with Monica San Juan tied for 23rd at 221 and Megan Woods tied for 34th at 223. UTC freshman Maddy McDanel played as an individual and tied for 30th at 222.

Boxing

- Chattanooga's DeMarcus Rogers won his professional super welterweight boxing match Saturday at the State Fair Sports Arena in Nashville. He knocked out Edward Massey from Clarksville, Tenn., in the fifth round of a fight slated for six rounds.

Soccer

- The Lee University women won their Gulf South Conference opener Sunday against visiting North Alabama, 1-0, with Suzanne Arant scoring in the 87th minute on Katie Cloud's assist. Haley Gribler made three saves for Lee (4-1-1).

- UTC lost a nonconference match 3-2 Sunday at Austin Peay. Ellie Myrick's 72nd-minute free kick found the net to cut Austin Peay's lead to 2-1, but the Governors responded with another goal 10 minutes later. Karina Jensen scored the final goal in the 85th minute on an assist from McKenzie Gregg. Katie Emig made three saves for the Mocs (2-6-1).

- The Dalton State College men won 7-0 at Fisk on Saturday and joined the first-year women's team in sweeping Oakwood in dominant fashion back in Dalton on Sunday. Santiago Moore scored two goals, Sebastian Guzman had two assists and Kiko Rodriguez and Rury Alvarez each had a goal and an assist for the Roadrunners at Fisk. In their 12-1 win Sunday, Alvarez and Andres Pena had two goals among 10 players who scored for the Roadrunners (6-0-1); six had assists. The DSC women improved to 4-2-1 as they won 15-0, with a hat trick from Rosie Lindo pacing nine players who scored.

- The Sewanee men lost Sunday at Randolph, 4-0, while the Sewanee women lost 3-2 in overtime at Hanover. In the women's match, Sewanee led 2-1 late after Shelby Meckstroth converted a 54th-minute penalty kick and Elizabeth Eidson scored in the 81st minute, but Hanover's Anna Cornacchione found the net in the 90th minute and also scored in overtime. Sewanee (3-5) keeper Samantha Bourgeois made four saves. In the men's match, Will Merriman made four saves for Sewanee (4-2-1).

Tennis

- UTC's Caroline Hall won the Grey Draw singles final Sunday in the USC Upstate Fall Invitational, and the Mocs' Delaney Edwards and Sydney Patton also prevailed in the main-draw doubles final. Hall beat Queens University of Charlotte's Carlotta Nassi, losing the first set 5-7, winning the second 7-6 (6) and leading the third 4-1 when Nassi retired. Edwards and Patton beat Armstrong State's Lena Lutzeier and Paula Roca Boixader 6-4.

Volleyball

- Sewanee beat Millsaps 3-1 in a Southern Athletic Association match Sunday, with the host Tigers shaking off a 25-22 loss in the first game to win the next three 25-17, 25-21 and 25-20. Stat leaders for Sewanee (7-3, 1-2) included Diamond Stewart (13 kills), Constance Connolly (17 assists) and Sara Jayne Sutton (23 digs).

Field Hockey

- Washington & Lee scored the first six goals and defeated visiting Sewanee 7-1 in Division III competition Saturday. Virginia Barry scored off a penalty corner at 43:08 for the Tigers. Sewanee lost 2-1 at Ferrum on Sunday in its SAA opener, with Emily Sloan scoring a tying goal on Carrie Anderson's assist at 45:55 for Sewanee (3-3).
