Former Covenant College softball and basketball player Christine Core Engbers from Dade County is now Covenant's head softball coach. She was the full-time assistant coach last season after three years as a part-time assistant, and she co-coached Dade to the Class AA high school state championship in 2012 and deep playoff runs the next two years. "I am excited and blessed to have the opportunity to coach at my alma mater," she said in a Covenant release Tuesday. "Both Covenant College and the softball program are integral elements of my life, and they helped shape me not only as an athlete and a student but now as a coach. I'm excited to continue growing this program." Engbers, who is married to former Scots basketball player Bryant Engbers, had a career .335 batting average with 162 hits and the single-season and career stolen-base records for the Lady Scots with 26 and 59. She played in 56 basketball games at Covenant, with 42 starts. "We are blessed to have somebody of Christine's caliber already a part of the softball program," athletic director Tim Sceggel said. "Her experience as a player and assistant coach at Covenant, along with great success as a high school head coach, make her well suited for this role."
