Around the Region: Volleyball Mocs fall 3-0 in SoCon opener at Samford

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team opened Southern Conference play Friday night with a 3-0 loss at Samford. The set scores were 25-23, 25-13, 25-19. Miranda Elpers had 12 kills and 10 digs and Rachel Petkosh had 18 digs for the losing Mocs (7-7), while Madison Bergren had 17 assists and Lauren Greenspoon added 10. Allie Davenport was second on the team in kills with six and also had 10 digs. Erin Bognar and Gabbi Greenwald had 13 and 12 kills for Samford (10-6), and Erika Pifer had 29 assists.

* Lee University lost 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 225-11, 25-14) in Gulf South volleyball Friday at West Florida. Blaire Beamer led Lee (3-6, 0-4) with nine kills, while Brooke Wilsman had eight and Catherine Conley and Carly Callahan added seven each. Sadie Johnson and Kristi Farley had 17 and 15 assists, and Crystal Dedes had seven block assists.

* Covenant College beat Methodist 3-0 and William Peace 3-1 in USA South volleyball Friday at Winston-Salem, N.C. In the 25-13, 25-13, 25-19 trouncing of Methodist, Hannah Harris and Ginny Moore had 13 and 11 kills and Morgan Opgenorth added nine, while Schuyler Moore had 37 assists. For the Lady Scots (5-7, 1-1) in the 25-23, 25-23, 18-25, 25-20 defeat of Peace (10-3, 1-1), Jessica Seehorn had 14 kills, Schuyler Moore had 40 assists, 11 digs and eight kills, Harris had 10 kills, Opgenorth had eight kills, Ginny Moore had 22 digs with seven kills and Hannah Stewart had 21 digs.

* Dalton State lost 3-1 (22-25, 25-13, 25-10, 25-17) in Southern States Athletic Conference volleyball Thursday night at Mobile and fell 3-2 in another league match Friday at first-year program William Carey. Against Mobile, Ryan Burke had eight kills, Anna Metzler seven kills and eight digs, Clarissa Weber 17 assists, Brooke Thomas 11 assists and Karly Newman 15 digs. Metzler had 17 kills and 14 digs, Grace Hardin had 12 kills, Weber had 26 assists, Thomas had 19 assists, Newman had 23 digs and Julia Borges had 13 digs in the 21-25, 25-20, 25-18, 19-25, 16-11 loss Friday for DSC (3-8, 2-4).

Golf

* The UTC men's golfers are 11th out of 16 teams after the first round of the Maui Jim Intercollegiate in Scottsdale, Ariz. The Mocs shot a collective 286 Friday, one shot behind California and Georgia State, with Stuart Thomas firing a 3-under-par 69 (tied for 15th) that didn't count for the team because he's playing as an individual. Brooks Thomas had a 71, Wes Gosselin a 72, Andrew Weathers a 73, Lake Johnson a 74 and Will Porter a drop-score 75. Kent State has a five-shot team lead at 264.

Soccer

* Four players scored in Furman's 4-0 women's soccer victory Friday against visiting UTC - two goals in each half. That lifted the Paladins to 7-1-1, 1-0 in the Southern Conference. The Mocs (2-7-1, 0-1) got six saves from Melia Correa.

* North Carolina Wesleyan scored the first three goals and held on for a 3-2 USA South men's soccer win over Covenant on Friday at Rocky Mount, N.C. Jonathan Barrett and Jesse Riggs scored with five and three minutes left for the Scots (1-5-1, 1-2) with assists from Carl Simakoff and John O'Carroll, and Jonathan Crossman made 11 saves.

* The Covenant women won 1-0 at Huntingdon with Abby Gienapp scoring 25:22 into the game from an Anna Porch assist. The Lady Scots (5-1, 3-0) had a 12-5 advantage in shots.

* The Dalton State men's soccer game scheduled for Friday night at Life University was called off. No makeup date has been set.

Field Hockey

* Lauren Travis had two goals and an assist in leading Rhodes to a 3-1 Southern Athletic Association field hockey win Friday at Sewanee. All the scoring was in the second half, with Virginia Barry netting an assist from Carrie Anderson for Sewanee (3-4, 0-2) 39 seconds after Travis gave the Lynx (6-1, 2-0) a 1-0 lead. Katya Waters made eight saves in defeat.
