Around the Region: Hamilton Heights girls finish second in Dick's Nationals

The top-ranked Miami Country Day Spartans beat Chattanooga's Hamilton Heights Lady Hawks 81-55 in the championship game Saturday morning of the Dick's Sporting Goods national high tournament in New York. Miami Country Day outscored the No. 2-ranked Lady Hawks 22-8 in the first quarter and 30-6 in the third on the way to its second Dick's title in three years. Tournament MVP Maria Alvarez hit three 3-point baskets in the 11-0 run that began the second half and wound up with eight in her 26 points, and Kelsey Marshall added 23 points. Amber Hunt and Jazmine Massengill led Hamilton Heights with 14 and 11.

Baseball

- Cleveland State completed a series sweep of perennial TCCAA baseball power Walters State on Saturday, the host Cougars winning 10-5 and losing 1-0. Sean McDermott was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Devon Gardner was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and John Sharpe homered and doubled and scored three runs for Cleveland State (23-10, 8-7) in the first game, when Chase Fullington was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI and Jake Rogers improved to 6-0 with eight strikeouts. Corey Linz pitched a four-hitter in the loss, giving up the game's lone run in the seventh inning. Ricky Karcher threw a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts for Walters (35-7, 12-3).

- Lee University lost 7-3 twice at West Alabama in Gulf South Conference baseball Saturday. Taylor Stafford was 4-for-6 with a home run and five runs scored for the hosts (23-10, 13-7), while Drew Johnson drove in two runs in the first game for the Flames (20-14, 9-11) and was 2-for-2 with an RBI in the rematch. Lee's Jordan Howard homered and singled in game two, and Geremy Walton also was 2-for-4 and scored a run.

- Bryan bounced back from a 7-1 loss Saturday at Point to salvage a win in the weekend AAC series, and the Lions (24-12, 9-6) did it emphatically, 17-1. Wade Weinburger homered, tripled and drove in four runs, Trevor Behrent homered and singled and had two RBIs, C.J. Owens was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Lake Burris doubled twice and scored twice. Owens homered in the loss.

- Alex Kerr's eighth-inning homer gave him eight RBIs in Covenant's three-game USA South series against Huntingdon and an 11-10 victory after a 12-6 loss Saturday. Caleb Bloye was 3-for-5 and Kerr 2-for-3 and Joel Johnson matched their two RBIs each in the win, when Kerr, Trenton Nobles and Christian Murray each had two hits and scored twice for the Scots (12-17, 5-10). Nobles was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Forrest Hunter and Murray each had two hits and an RBI in the loss.

- Sewanee lost 4-0 and 13-7 in Southern Athletic Association baseball at Berry. Derek Hullings was 4-for-7 with a run scored in the doubleheader for Sewanee (13-14, 5-5), and Jackson Cooper had two hits, an RBI and a run in game two, when Slade Dale from Ringgold was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Berry (16-12, 6-5).

- Chattanooga Lookouts general manager Rich Mozingo will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without.

Running

- Led by repeat winner Joseph Crook in 17 minutes, 6.54 seconds, Cleveland residents took the first three places out of 494 finishers Saturday morning in the 15th annual 65 Roses 5k at Lee University. The race, along with the Great Strides Walk, benefits the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Matt Jenkins and Jacob Garrett were second and third in 17:19 and 17:36, followed by Ryan Shrum in 17:48. Rachel Mason of Hixson was the female winner and eighth overall in 18:56, and Beth Johnson of Cleveland was the runner-up in 20:15.

Lacrosse

- The Sewanee men's lacrosse team won 12-7 Friday night against visiting SAA foe Birmingham-Southern. The Tigers (5-5, 3-0) led 6-0 at halftime, with six scorers and a 31-11 shots advantage, and wound up outshooting the Panthers 56-28. Hayden Hunt finished with two goals and an assist, and Peter Brown and Thomas Lynde each scored twice as well.

Golf

- Greg Brock of Rocky Face and Tony Patterson of Dalton are tied for sixth at 145 in the championship flight along with Rocky Face's Matt Oxford and his partner, Philip Hughes of Kennesaw, after the second round of the 2017 Georgia Four-Ball tournament at Jekyll Island Golf Club. Former Calhoun High School quarterback Tre Lamb is on a team tied for 10th at 147. The Dalton pairings of Chris Tallent Jr. with Kyle Pettyjohn and Lucas Nations with Andy Nations are sixth and seventh in Flight 1 at 147 and 148 - the Nations duo after a 71 Saturday - and Mike and Nash Nance of Calhoun are tied for third in Flight 2 at 149.
