Around the Region: Chattanooga FC's John Carrier joins Bryan soccer staff

Chattanooga Football Club player John Carrier has been hired as an assistant men's soccer coach at Bryan College. A former four-time all-conference selection at Tennessee Wesleyan in Bryan's league, Carrier has been with Chattanooga FC since 2013 and has been part of three National Premier Soccer League conference championships and two national finals. He worked one season as an assistant coach at Huntingdon College and three at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, where he obtained a master's degree. "We are excited to welcome John to the Bryan soccer family," Lions head coach Drew Courtney said in a release. "John brings a lot of experience as both a coach and player that will greatly benefit our program."

- A weekly radio show about Chattanooga FC is set to begin April 22 on ESPN 105.1 The Zone. "Chattanooga Football Club Radio" is scheduled to run from noon to 1 p.m. every Saturday, hosted by Reed Farnsley and Peter Woolcock.

Golf

- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's Brooks Thomas was announced Wednesday as the Southern Conference men's golfer of the week for March 29-April 4. Thomas, who played for Ringgold High School, tied for 11th in the Old Waverly Collegiate tournament in Mississippi after shooting 141 (70-71) in the rain-shortened event.

- Wil Manuel from Chattanooga Christian School and Maryville College teammate Garrett Compliment shot par rounds of 72 to lead their Scots to a 301-315 golf win Tuesday against Covenant at Green Meadow Country Club in Alcoa. The competition was halved from 36 to 18 holes. The two sets of Scots were trying to improve their GolfStat rankings in advance of the USA South tournament beginning April 13 in LaGrange, Ga. Covenant's Nathan Hawkins was third with a 74, and Marshall Kent and Josh Wall tied for fifth with 79s. Both teams officially got in the league tournament Wednesday as two of the top nine USAS teams in the rankings. No. 1-ranked Huntingdon leads the field, trailed closely by No. 5 LaGrange, No. 7 Methodist (the 2016 champion) and No. 10 Greensboro.

Softball

- Covenant is in the USA South softball tournament as the No. 4 seed from the West and will play a best-of-three series this weekend at No. 3 seed Huntingdon in Montgomery, Ala. The teams will play a doubleheader Friday beginning at 2 p.m. EDT. If a third game is necessary, it will be played Saturday at 1. The series winner will advance to the six-team double-elimination portion of the tournament April 13-15 in LaGrange, part of the USA South Spring Festival.

- Chattanooga State moved up to No. 11 in the NJCAA Division I softball national rankings this week. The Lady Tigers will host Columbia State in doubleheaders Friday and Saturday, beginning at 4 p.m. and noon. Also from the TCCAA, Walters State is No. 17.

Boxing

- The Red Bank Boxing Club is hosting a night of amateur bouts Saturday at the Luken Sports Facility behind Red Bank High School, and as of Wednesday there were 27 matchups scheduled with fighters from Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama. The event begins at 5 p.m. Admission costs $7, $3 for students, with no charge for ages 12 and younger. For information, call Skipper Fairbanks at (423) 877-4113.

Baseball

- Area Chevrolet dealers are hosting two free youth baseball instructional clinics next week - from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on April 13 at Camp Jordan Park's fields 1 and 2, and from 9 a.m. to noon on April 15 at Municipal Park in LaFayette, Ga. Check-in for each begins an hour before the clinic starts. Both sessions are for boys and girls ages 6 to 14, plus special-needs participants of all ages, and instruction will be provided by Ripken Baseball.
