Around the Region: UTC men's golfers fourth in Nashville tournament

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team is in fourth place after Monday's two rounds in the Ryman Hospitality Intercollegiate tournament at Richland Country Club in Nashville. In gusty wind, the Mocs shot 305 and 296 for a 601 that has them six shots behind third-place Western Kentucky and one ahead of Mercer and Marshall. Host Lipscomb leads the 14-team field at 574, one better than Mississippi. UTC's Wes Gosselin is 12th individually at 147, one shot ahead of teammate Brooks Thomas and four ahead of Etienne Brault, who's tied for 20th.

* The UTC women golfers are 10th out of 15 teams in the Brickyard Collegiate in Macon, Ga., after Monday's two rounds. The Mocs are at 612, one behind Maryland. Furman leasds at 584. UTC's Holly Morgan and Cristina Perez are 25th and tied for 31st individually at 150 and 152.

Wrestling

* UTC heavyweight wrestler Jared Johnson was one of the 10 recipients named Monday for the Southern Conference postgraduate scholarships. The scholarships are for $2,000 each and will be awarded officially at the league honors dinner May 31 at Myrtle Beach, S.C. Johnson specifically is getting the William Moore Graduate Scholarship presented by McMillan Pazdan Smith. "Jared is the epitome of what it means to be a student-athlete," UTC coach Heath Eslinger said of the three-time NCAA tournament qualifier. "He was a top-10 wrestler all year, while working toward an MBA."

Softball

* After losing 4-2 and winning 5-1 Sunday in its TCCAA doubleheader against Columbia State, the Chattanooga State softball team won 12-1 in five innings and 3-2 Monday against nonconference visitor Snead State. Kaleigh Wynne pitched a two-hitter and went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs for the Lady Tigers (33-7, 21-3) in Monday's first game, when Colbie Thomas was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and Lillie McCrary was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Abby Hicks was the starting and finishing pitcher in game two, allowing no runs in her 5 2/3 innings, and Wynne was 2-for-3 with two homers while Brie Levy was 1-for-2 with the other RBI. Devan Brown was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Thomas was 2-for-4 in Sunday's loss. In the win against Columbia, Abbey White improved her pitching record to 9-1 with a five-hitter and went 2-for-3 with a run, while Tori Barnes had two RBIs.

Track & Field

* Amid a slew of personal records, several Covenant College athletes scored points in the Berry Field Day Invitational track and field meet this past weekend. The Scots' Kyle Delk was third in men's high jump and seventh in long jump, and Matthew Tueller was eighth in his first 3000-meter steeplechase. The Lady Scots' Caroline Cone, Hanna Wilt, Hannah Hennigh and Anna Porch were sixth in the 4x400 relay.

Basketball

* Former Boyd-Buchanan and Covenant College basketball standout and Lee University coach Tommy Brown has been named the men's basketball coach at NAIA member Webber International University in Babson Park, Fla. The Warriors were 8-20 overall and 3-13 in their Sun Conference this past season, while Brown was on the women's staff at Illinois. After compiling a 92-21 high school coaching record, including at Orangewood Christian in central Florida, the 45-year-old Brown earned 379 wins at Bluefield College and Lee. He was Bluefield's athletic director in 2004-05. "The program is thrilled to have someone with the experience and desire to develop young men both on the court and in the classroom," Webber AD Darren Richie said in a school release. "Coach Brown has had many years of success with NAIA and NCAA programs, and we're excited to have someone lead our program with his expertise."

Tennis

* Covenant College freshman Esther Eddy was chosen the USA South women's tennis rookie of the week for the second time this season after going 3-0 at No. 4 singles and 2-1 in doubles last week. Both doubles wins were at No. 1. Eddy is 13-5 in singles with nine wins in her last 10 matches.
