Around the Region: Dalton State men's golfers dominate Southern States Athletic Conference

Dalton State expanded its lead in the Southern States Athletic Conference men's golf tournament from 12 strokes to 22 with a second consecutive 278 Tuesday at Arrowhead Country Club in Montgomery, Ala. The NAIA's third-ranked Roadrunners are at 12-under-par 556 going into the final round of the 10-team event, led by P.J. Shields from LaFayette at 135 after a second-day 67. Teammates S.M. Lee, Ben Rebne and Chase Cole are, respectively, second at 138, tied for fourth at 141 and sixth at 142. Cole moved up eight spots with a 68. Dalton State's Lee, Dalton Johnson, Shields, Adam Morris and Rebne made the all-conference team announced Tuesday, and Lee, Rebne and Sport Allmond were on the five-man all-freshman team. Lee is the No. 2-ranked golfer in the NAIA. Allmond, like Rebne from Heritage High in Ringgold, was DSC's representative on the SSAC Champions of Character team.

Basketball

» Former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga guard Peyton Woods has decided to continue his basketball career at Tusculum College in NCAA Division II. The 6-foot-4 resident of Monticello, Ky., is the first recruit for new Pioneers coach Nick Pasqua. Pasqua previously was on the staff at King University and said he "recruited Peyton very hard two years ago" out of Wayne County (Ky.) High School, where Woods scored 2,467 points and made 362 3-point shots. He was a two-time Kentucky all-state selection and averaged 22.1 points a game as a senior. At UTC he appeared in 31 games in two seasons and totaled 103 points, with 14 in two games and 12 in another. "I know exactly what kind of player we are getting," Pasqua said in a Tusculum release Tuesday. "He will add an immediate scoring threat to our team next year." Woods excelled academically in high school and at UTC.

» The Professional Bull Riders organization's second annual Sean Willingham Invitational competition will be held Friday and Saturday at McKenzie Arena, beginning at 7:30 both nights. As part of the build-up, Crockett Powersports will host the inaugural Cowboys & Heroes Patriot Ride beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday at 4113 South Access Road, honoring U.S. military service men and women, veterans and police and fire department personnel. All motorcycle clubs and riders are invited to take part. Two-time PBR world champion J.B. Mauney, 2016 world champ Cooper Davis, third-ranked Chase Outlaw and fellow top-10 members Mason Lowe and Stormy Wing will be among the weekend's competitors. Country music entertainer Colt Ford will be present Friday to join event producer Willingham for photos and autographs at intermission. Baseball

» No. 21-ranked Bryan College won 11-9 in a rain-shortened NAIA baseball game Tuesday at Cumberland, as Justin Morhardt led off with a home run, Lake Burris hit a three-run homer and Trevor Behrent went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Also for the Lions (31-13), Mikey Rita was 2-for-4 with two RBI hits and Tyler Scott and Brookes Jones each also was 2-for-4. Tennessee Wesleyan remained sixth in the NAIA poll.

» Lee University's scheduled NCAA Division II nonconference baseball game Tuesday night at Tusculum was postponed until next Tuesday at 6 p.m. Cleveland State was rained out against visiting West Georgia Tech, and their doubleheader was rescheduled for 1 p.m. today, again with weather permitting.

Softball

» Ninth-ranked Campbellsville beat visiting Bryan 9-1 and 10-2 in NAIA softball Tuesday and now is 33-11. Kayla Hayes was 2-for-3 with a double and Marissa Murray had the RBI in the first game for Bryan (20-20), and Heidi Smith hit a two-run single in game two. Tennessee Wesleyan's home doubleheader against the University of the Cumberlands was rained out.

» Cleveland State's scheduled home softball doubleheader against Georgia Highlands was postponed Tuesday and reset for today, starting at 2 p.m.
