Around the Region: Roadrunners romp in SSAC golf tournament

Third-ranked Dalton State cruised to the Southern States Athletic Conference men's golf championship with a final-round 273 Wednesday for a school-record 54-hole 829 at Montgomery, Ala. The Roadrunners won the 10-team event by 32 strokes at Arrowhead Country Club, led by S.M. Lee at 206 for his fourth medal of the season, second-place P.J. Shields at 208, third-place Chase Cole at 209 and Ben Rebne tying for fifth at 212. Cole and Dalton Johnson closed with 67s, and Lee shot 68 as the SSAC player and freshman of the year. Shields was newcomer of the year, and DSC's Ben Rickett was coach of the year. DSC begins play May 16 in the NAIA national tournament in Silvis, Ill.

Tennis

* The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's Samantha Caswell was the All-Southern Conference women's tennis second-team pick at No. 1 singles for 2017, and she and Rachele Gazzola made the second team at No. 1 doubles. They were 14-5 together and 12-5 at No. 1 in the spring. Neither played No. 1 last year, when Caswell played mostly No. 3 in singles. The Mocs (14-7, 4-3) face Samford at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the SoCon tournament in Greenville, S.C. UTC's Niklas Gerdes made the men's all-freshman team. The male Mocs open Friday against East Tennessee State.

Softball

* Tennessee Tech scored six runs in the second inning and defeated UTC 8-0 in nonconference softball Wednesday at Frost Stadium. Danielle Liberatore allowed three hits and struck out seven Mocs in her four innings as the pitcher for Tech (15-25), which got an RBI apiece from former Walker Valley and Lee University player Hallie Davis and Northwest Whitfield graduate Bayli Cruse. Hayleigh Weissenbach was 2-for-3 for UTC (12-31).

* Berry College, 35-2 and ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division III, heads the seven-team Southern Athletic Association softball tournament being played Friday through Sunday at Chattanooga's Warner Park. Berry finished 17-0 in league play in the regular season and awaits the winner between Birmingham-Southern (21-16, 8-8) and Hendrix (16-18, 8-10) in the double-elimination event. Host Sewanee (1-32, 0-17) opens at 3 p.m. Friday against No. 2 seed Millsaps (23-13, 11-7). Third-seeded Rhodes (21-19, 9-9) faces Centre (22-17, 8-10) in the first round.

Baseball

* Mikey Rita was 2-for-3 with two doubles and four RBIs and Wade Weinburger was 2-for-2 with a homer and three RBIs as No. 21 Bryan won 20-11 at Martin Methodist in NAIA baseball Wednesday. Also for the Lions (32-13), Lake Burris homered among three hits, Hudson Clare was 3-for-5, Kila Zuttermeister and Fernando Garcia each tripled while combining for five hits, five runs and four RBIs and Prentice Young stole three bases and scored four runs.

* Cleveland State won 6-4 and lost 6-2 against West Georgia Tech in a doubleheader delayed from Tuesday. Jordan Ransom had a two-run double and Brett Browning was 2-for-3 and scored a run in the win for the Cougars (29-14), and Trey Vanderpool was 3-for-3 with an RBI in the loss.

* Ryan Addington was 4-for-5 with a triple, a double and two RBIs and Jimmy Rice was 3-for-4 with three RBIs as Division II Carson-Newman defeated Division III Covenant 9-5. Donny Lewis had a two-run double for Covenant (13-23), which got two hits apiece from Caleb Bloye, Joel Johnson and Luke Harvey.

Track & Field

* Lee University took all four honors awarded Wednesday for Gulf South track and field athletes of the week. From their performances at the Mt. SAC Relays in California, Harold Smith was the GSC men's track performer, Josiah Brooks the field performer, Christian Noble the freshman of the week and Adrian Martin the women's track perfomer.

* Hixson native and Baylor School graduate Selena Popp helped Samford win three of the SoCon's four track and field weekly honors. She was the women's field honoree after scoring 4,985 points in the heptathlon at the South Alabama Invitational. She set the SoCon indoor meet pentathlon record this year.
