Around the Region: Dayton's Michael Neal fourth in Bassmaster event on Chickamauga

Michael Neal of Dayton, Tenn., is fourth after two days of the Bass Pro Shops Southern Open No. 2 tournament out of Dayton Boat Dock on Chickamauga Lake. The FLW Tour regular was fourth Thursday in the Bassmaster Elite Series event with 23 pounds of bass and added 18 pounds Friday. John Cox of Debary, Fla., leads with 47-13 as the top 12 go back out this morning. Freddy Palmer from Estill Springs, Hensley Powell of Whitwell and Andy Morgan wound up 23rd, 24th and 26th at 32-5, 32-4 and 31-15, and Steve Barnes of Harrison was 33rd at 30-14 in the field of 195. Chattanooga's Tim Patterson is fifth in the co-angler top 12 at 19-13.

Baseball/Softball

- Tennessee Wesleyan scored nine runs in the first two innings of its AAC home baseball game Friday against Point University and won 14-5. Alfred Cruz was 3-for-4 with six RBIs and Nehwon Norkeh was 2-for-4 with five RBIs for TWU (32-14, 17-5), each with a home run, while Edwin Bonilla was 4-for-5 and scored three runs. Dan Ward was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs, and Cody Erickson was 2-for-2 with two runs and one RBI. Bryan's AAC series at Bluefield was delayed to Monday and Tuesday.

- Chattanooga State's baseball and softball series at Volunteer State were delayed to Sunday evening and Monday. Lee University already had reset its games with Mississippi College to Sunday and Monday.

- Sewanee's softball season ended Friday with 9-1 and 9-0 losses to Millsaps and Centre in the Southern Athletic Association tournament at Warner Park. The Tigers (1-34) were no-hit by Cassidy DeNoon in the first game, but she hit three batters and walked seven, including Katie Roth for the RBI. Nationally third-ranked Berry College (36-2) beat Birmingham-Southern 9-3 with shortstop Sarah Moore from Baylor School going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run and teammates Brittany Ferrell and Marie Collop going a combined 6-for-8 with a triple, three doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored. Karlie Jarrett from Chattooga High was 0-for-0 and scored twice for Berry, and Whitney Gribble from Murray County pitched the last two innings, allowing two hits and a run.

Lacrosse

- Top-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan beat fourth seed Reinhardt 16-9 in the semifinals of the AAC women's lacrosse tournament Friday at Waleska, Ga., and is set to play No. 2 seed Columbia (S.C.) today for the championship. Mikayla Virden, Jasmine Hickman and Emily Waldrop scored four goals apiece for TWU (12-4), Virden and Hickman each with an assist, and Lauren McHugh and Sydney St. Clemmons each added two goals and an assist. Kelly Bilz made 10 saves. The top-seeded Reinhardt men beat fourth seed Wesleyan 15-4 in their semifinal in Knoxville. AAC player of the year Drew Wassenaar had two goals for TWU (5-9).

- Preston Cooper scored five goals as the Sewanee women's lacrosse team beat visiting Oglethorpe 20-11 in an SAA tournament quarterfinal Friday night. Alden Woolford and Kit Sommi added three goals apiece for the Tigers (13-4).

Track & Field

- Lee University freshman Jordan Allison set a Gulf South track and field meet record Friday with 4,197 points in the heptathlon at Rome, Ga., and classmate Camilla Sims won the shot put with a record 12.32-meter heave. Lee's Audrey Smith (11:48.97), Jessica Childers, Blakely Moore and Becca Umbarger finished first, second, fourth and fifth in the 3000 steeplechase, and Adrian Martin was first in the 100 prelims. In the heptathlon, Allison won the high jump and 800 and was second in the 200 and third in long jump and javelin. The Lady Flames are second by one point to Alabama-Huntsville. For the fourth-place Lee men, Josiah Brooks broke the GSC record with a 15.21-meter triple jump, and Christian Noble (9:17.58) and Thomas Kelton were first and third in the steeplechase. Thursday, Smith, Amy Carpenter and Logan Hernandez were second through fourth with Lily Fell sixth in the women's 10k, and Seth Eagleson was fourth in the men's.
