Around the Region: Lee teams second in Gulf South golf tournament

Lee University slid from first to second place Monday in the Gulf South Conference women's golf tournament at Callaway Gardens, as 16th-ranked West Georgia shot a 298 and takes a 604 total into today's final 18 holes. No. 13 Lee is at 617 after a 313 in the rainy, windy conditions. Lee's sixth-ranked men also are in second but 25 shots behind top-ranked West Florida's 561. The Flames' Shea Sylvester and Corey Sheppard are tied for fourth and sixth individually at 145 and 146, and Matt Johnson, Adam Wright and Scott Odell are tied for 11th at 149. The Lady Flames' Sam Burrus followed her opening 70 with an 80 but still is tied for third, four shots out of first. Lee freshmen Anne Hedegaard and Haverly Harrold share eighth at 155, and Caroline Moore is tied for 14th at 158.

» With Tia Teiniketo and Katie Dalton first and second individually at 70 and 73 and Haejin Choe tied for seventh at 77, Dalton State shot a 301 for a three-stroke first-round lead Monday in the eight-team Southern States Athletic Conference women's golf tournament in Montgomery, Ala. DSC's Isabel Rijos and Caroline Griffin are tied for 19th and 22nd at 81 and 82.

» Monday play was rained out in both Southern Conference golf tournaments. The men's teams got in two rounds Sunday at Pinehurst, N.C., and will finish today with UTC tied for second with UNC Greensboro at 598, six shots behind East Tennessee State. The women still have two rounds to complete in Lexington, S.C., and UTC is second at 300 but 20 strokes behind favored Furman.

Softball

» After Kaleigh Wynne pitched a five-inning four-hitter and went 2-for-3 with a home run, Abbey White turned in a seven-inning three-hitter as Chattanooga State won 9-1 and 9-0 in TCCAA softball Monday at Volunteer State. Courtney Condon drove in six runs. She was 1-for-2 with a homer and four RBIs in the first game, when Devan Brown was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Madison Kurtz had two RBIs. Alaeni Ray was 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs in game two for the Lady Tigers (39-7, 27-3), and Lillie McCrary was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. They are set to host Walters State (34-6, 28-2) in a first-place showdown Thursday and Friday.

» Taylor Moran pitched a three-hit shutout as Lee University edged visiting Mississippi College 1-0 in the second game of their GSC softball doubleheader Monday. Stevie Baird scored the run in the sixth inning on a fielder's-choice RBI by Abby McKinney after an infield hit by Courtney Crawford. Crawford and Zoe Miller each was 2-for-3 for the Lady Flames (33-11, 19-10), who lost the first game 10-0. The Choctaws also are 19-10 in the GSC, 28-18 overall. The teams are tied for fourth place, and Moran is the league's ERA leader at 1.21.

Baseball

» The Lee baseball team salvaged a win in its GSC home series with Mississippi College on Nathan Wierzgac's second home run of the finale Monday, leading off the bottom of the seventh inning. That was his 10th of the season. He was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored in the 6-5 victory, while Geremy Walton was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run and Jordan Howard was 2-for-3 with a run for the Flames (25-21, 12-18). Reliever Wes Albert (6-2) got the pitching win with four hitless innings. Earlier, Walton and Drew Johnson each was 2-for-3 for Lee in a 6-2 loss.

» Devon Gardner's two-out single in the top of the ninth inning allowed Cleveland State to win 6-5 Monday in the final game of its TCCAA baseball series at No. 2-ranked Dyersburg State (40-5, 21-2). Cleveland State (30-16, 12-12) trailed 5-2 before Noah Hill's two-run homer in the seventh. Pinch hitter John Hennen singled with one out in the ninth but was forced out at second before Cameron Payne walked and pinch runner Brett Browning and Payne moved up on a wild pitch. Gardner's third hit of the game brought in the tying run, and Payne scored on the right fielder's error. Brandon Mason was 2-for-4 with a double and a two-run single.
