Walters State goes 3-1 in first-place series at Chattanooga State

The first-place TCCAA softball showdown at Chattanooga State went the way of the Walters State Lady Senators, who won 10-3 and 5-2 on Friday and responded to the Lady Tigers' 9-4 win Saturday with an 11-0 victory.

Former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga player Jordan Fortel got the first pitching win Friday and closed out the 5-2 game for the Morristown team, which will take a 37-7 record into the TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII tournament May 8-10 in Gallatin, Tenn. The Lady Senators finished 31-3 in league play.

Chattanooga State (40-10, 27-6) will be seeded second in the tournament. Abby Hicks was the Lady Tigers' winning pitcher Saturday, in a game in which Lillie McCrary was 2-for-3 with a three-run home run and two runs scored, Kaleigh Wynne also homered and scored three runs with two RBIs and Madison Kurtz was 2-for-3 with a triple.

Devan Brown had a two-run homer and Kurtz the other RBI in Friday's opener, and Wynne homered and Brown had the other RBI in game two, each going 1-for-2.

Jackson State won 12-2 and 4-2 in Saturday's TCCAA games at Cleveland State (14-32, 7-26). The Lady Generals (39-17, 23-13) won 7-3 and 4-3 on Friday.

  • UNC Greensboro 10-15, UTC 0-7: At Frost Stadium, the visiting Spartans plunged the Mocs to 12-34 overall, 2-12 in the Southern Conference with their seventh loss in a row. The first game was 2-0 until a five-run fourth inning for UNCG. whose Gabrielle Cubbage was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, but game two was 15-1 until UTC's six-run fourth that included two-run doubles by Katy Richardson and Hayleigh Weissenbach.

Weissenbach was 2-for-2 and Emma Sturdivant was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Weissenbach now is batting .329, second on the team to Aly Walker's .331.

For UNCG (26-20, 9-4) in the second game, Marisa Sholtes and Rachael McClaskey each batted in four runs, McClaskey going 4-for-4 and Sholtes homering and scoring three runs, while Alex Overdiep was 3-for-4 and scored four times.

  • West Florida 1-5, Lee 0-1: At Pensacola, Fla., NCAA Division II's 12th-ranked Argonauts swept the Gulf South Conference doubleheader. They'll close out the series and the regular season today.

Leigh Beatenbough allowed eight hits in taking the first-game pitching loss, as Lee (33-16, 19-12) managed only three hits off Becca Taylor. Taylor Moran, the reigning GSC freshman of the week, also gave up eight hits in the second loss, while the Lady Flames got only two (but seven walks) against Sarah Maloney for West Florida (38-12, 22-9). Zoe Miller had an RBI double.

  • Milligan 2, Tennessee Wesleyan 0: At Kingsport, Tenn., the seventh-seeded Lady Buffaloes won the losers-bracket final of the Appalachian Athletic Conference before falling 5-4 to nationally ranked Reinhardt for the championship.

Wesleyan (23-16) previously beat Union College 6-4 as Baylee Sutton went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Briana Muller went 2-for-2 with one RBI. Alyssa King also had two hits, and Calli Cross walked twice and scored two runs. Hanna Manley (9-3) was the winning pitcher, and Rachel Mathews got her fourth save of the season.

  • Brenau 2, Mobile 1: At Decatur, Ala., Kelsey Payne from East Hamilton and Savannah Moore from Soddy-Daisy each had a hit as the NAIA's No. 2-ranked Golden Tigers won the Southern States tournament in a nine-inning final. Brenau is 51-5 and wound up with a 30-0 record against SSAC competition.
